Your 6 Week Old Baby

If you are breastfeeding your baby, but want your baby to also be able to take a bottle from your partner, older children, grandparents, friends, or a childcare provider, now is the time to begin introducing the bottle to your infant. You can start with a small amount of expressed breast milk or formula. Your baby might be more willing to take the bottle from someone other than you in the beginning, so give your partner the bottle and let him have some bonding time with the baby for a change. Use "bottle time" as an opportunity to take a bath, run to the store, or do something else for yourself, uninterrupted.

If you choose never to introduce the bottle, that is alright too! Not every breastfeeding mother feels the need to substitute a nursing with bottles full of breast milk or formula. If you are able to be with your baby at every feeding then there is no pressure to ever introduce your baby to the bottle.

Week 6 Milestones

By now your baby's cooing might start sounding like vowels. You might even hear a combination of "words" coming out of your baby's mouth like "Goo ga."
At this point your baby may have found out that he can use his arms to push his chest up off the ground when he is enjoying some tummy time.

What Might Concern You at 6 Weeks

Stimulating your baby is a great way to help your baby learn about his environment. But how do you do it right, and how do you know when it is too much?

Start by talking to your baby when he is awake. Tell him what you are doing, sing to him, tickle him, and play with him. In doing this you will learn what makes your baby happy, and what upsets them. Give your baby just enough interaction, and try not to over do it.

If your baby becomes fussy, or is fussy in the beginning, it is a good sign that he isn't in the mood to be stimulated. At this point, give your baby some space and some peace and quiet. We all need our "alone" times, even little babies. Follow your baby's lead and it will make the play time that much better.
