"Per dollar, it’s still much cheaper to buy and use a film camera."

True and not true. You see if you like to take lots and lots of pictures because you little one is just fun to take pictures of, then in the long run you are not going to save money with a film camera. Film cost $10 - 12.00 for a box of three rolls. Processing a roll of 36, exposers $4 - 5.00. Do this 3 times a month and your expenses over a years time is not much of a savings for soon obsolete technology. Go get a DSLR that's about 2-3 years old. The mega pixels will average around 6 - 8MP. Thats all you need for you 3x5 or 4x6 prints. Another advantage in buying a digital camera is you don't need to print pictures you didn't really like. Out of 30 pictures I might print 10 of them to give to friends and family. You can't do that with film. A Nikon D40 with 6.1MP can be found for under $400. The Nikon D60 with 10.2 MP can be found for under $500.
