<p>&#8220;Mom, I&#8217;m bored!&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Dad, play with me!!&#8221;</p>
<p>Sound familiar?</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a parent, these plaintive cries from your children can become daily shouts. As busy moms and dads, we&#8217;re continuously torn by the demands on our time. Here are some simple ways to spend time with your kids while getting the jobs done that need to be done (including the toughest job of all, parenting). These Sneaky Fun ideas are also great ways to teach our children exactly how to successfully accomplish many routine tasks.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Make a silly dinner together.<br />
</strong>Think &#8216;Green Eggs and Ham&#8217; or try a picnic on the living room floor. Bring your child along for the meal planning, shopping, prep time and clean-up. Involve them each step of the way.</li>
<li><strong>Turn on the music and clean, clean, clean.<br />
</strong>Forget TELLING your kids to go clean; side-by-side, with some of their favorite music playing, move through the house dancing and cleaning. They&#8217;ll love it (and so will you).</li>
<li><strong>Exercise together.</strong><br />
You know you need to do it. Your child is your perfect exercise partner. Make it a &#8216;talk and play&#8217; time and you&#8217;ll both get fit together.</li>
<li><strong>Share a hobby.<br />
</strong>Love to fish, garden, sew, paint, sing? Share that love with your youngster. Try an interest that fascinates them. Learn a shared passion &#8211; together.</li>
<li><strong>Start a girls or boys night out.</strong><br />
You will make an incredible impression with this one. Take your daughter out for regular manicures and lunch. Stay close to your son with a favorite concert or sporting event. Teach your children about wholesome entertainment and the joy of healthy relationships. You can even team up with another parent and child for regular fun; just make sure that honest conversation is the true priority.</li>
<li><strong>Improve their skills.</strong><br />
Do you have a student struggling with homework? Quit nagging and ask them to teach YOU what they&#8217;ve learned. Be a patient listener. The fastest way to learn is often to teach.</li>
<li><strong>Wash the cars.</strong><br />
Need I say more? Water, the chance to soak mom or dad, and a sense of accomplishment when it&#8217;s all done. Follow up with an ice cream cone for a job well done.</li>
<li><strong>Growing things.</strong><br />
Countless gardeners have discovered deep satisfaction in sharing their love of growing things with children and grandchildren. Gardening is a useful de-stressing tool and the most frustrated child tends to loosen up and share their heart while getting their hands dirty alongside a trusted adult.</li>
<li><strong>Plan, plan, plan.</strong><br />
If your household is anything like mine, it benefits greatly when I take the time to map out regular activities. Menu-planning, budgeting and vacationing come to mind, for starters. Show your child (of the appropriate age) how to use their time and money wisely by including them in the planning of everyday family activities. As they mature, they can easily be put in charge of some of these planning sessions, teaching them to younger siblings. Your trust and belief in your kids can ease the stress on them as they grow, too.</li>
<li><strong>Organize.</strong><br />
Almost all families struggle with organization in some area. Truth be told, we&#8217;re simply busy people and have often outgrown the simplistic organizing methods that once worked just fine. Give your kids the opportunity to be the creative organizer in your family. Whether its making sense of the family photos or tackling the hall closet, do it with them to get the job done and make a memory that&#8217;s shared.</li>
<li><strong>Schedule the fun.<br />
</strong>Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Try scheduling a set time of fun in exchange for a set time of work. For example, Monday can be family board game night while Saturday morning sees the family hard at work in the yard. Sometimes it&#8217;s easier for kids to see the point when it&#8217;s a straight trade off of time and energy.</p>
<p>The idea here is simple and clear. Use everyday activities to build relationships and teach responsibility. After all, everybody wins when &#8216;fun&#8217; becomes a part of daily life!</li>

<p align="justify">More children than ever before are being diagnosed with special needs “neurobiological disorders” such as ADHD, clinical depression, sensory integration dysfunction, autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Children with these disorders are very likely to have sleep difficulties. In addition, the problems that characterize the disorders will be greatly exacerbated by a lack of sleep.</p>
<p align="justify">I cannot stress enough the importance of good sleep hygiene and relaxation skills. Children with neurobiological disorders are often stressed—as they struggle to control their behavior, “fit in,” and try to keep up with their schoolwork. They may also suffer from sleep-related side effects of medications that they are taking. Medications to treat mood disorders, stimulant medications used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and some of the medications used to treat tics in Tourette’s syndrome can all contribute to sleep problems.</p>
<p align="justify">If sleep problems continue to plague your child, work with your physician. Consider alternative therapies such as nutritional and dietary supplements, biofeedback and Chinese medicine. This is likely to be an adjunct to the care provided by your child’s primary-care physician. To ensure maximum benefits and avoid any negative interactions between traditional medication and alternative remedies, be sure that all of your child’s health-care providers work together. When you find the right healing modality for your child, you are likely to see a big improvement.</p>
<p align="justify">All children do best with healthy sleep habits. However, everything needs to be “buttoned down” if your child has special needs. For instance, while many children would have some difficulty settling down after a stimulating evening, it might cause a child with a neurobiological disorder to be up half the night. And while a consistent bedtime is always recommended, a child with autism is likely to feel very unsafe and unsettled if his bedtime routine is disrupted. For many children, it’s as if their reactions have been cranked up to full throttle. Of course, each child is different and you will know best what sets off a problem in your own child. However, in general, the same rules apply—only more so.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep</strong></p>
<li>Avoid late afternoon or evening caffeine and sugar consumption. (Sodas are usually a huge source of both sugar and caffeine.)
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Avoid eating dinner later than three hours before bed if it seems to energize your child. (Eating too late at night raises the metabolic rate and energizes some children.) If your child has a bedtime snack, have it half an hour to an hour before bed.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Limit overstimulation. Limit television and video-game playing as well as reading an especially exciting book before bed. Play beautiful, soothing music of your choice to help calm and relax your household.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Have a quiet period just before bed. An easing-off period is important because most children have trouble going from full throttle to sleeping peacefully.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Have an evening bedtime snack that contains tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the brain converts into melatonin, which assists in sleep. Many children find a glass of warm milk calming and it is a good source of tryptophan. Other sources of tryptophan include cottage cheese, yogurt, pineapples, plums, bananas, eggs, turkey, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews and peanuts. It’s best to combine these tryptophan rich foods with complex carbohydrates like whole-grain cereals, bread or potatoes; it helps the brain to absorb the tryptophan. Bedtime snack suggestions: whole-grain cereal with milk, oatmeal with milk, peanut butter sandwich with ground sesame seeds, oatmeal cookies with milk.

<li>Give your child a ten minute warning before it’s time to get ready for bed to help him make the transition and finish up what he is doing.

</li>
<li>Have a consistent bedtime and a consistent bedtime routine. A warm bath is particularly soothing for most children because it relaxes the muscles and gets their bodies ready for rest.

</li>
<li>If your child is overly sensitive to light or sound, keep the lights dim and speak quietly throughout the bedtime routine.

The top reasons for this displeasure: waiting a long time for food (40 percent), unable to find a menu that will please both parents and children (35 percent) and dealing with misbehavior (30 percent).</p>

“Waiting anywhere with your children can be a problem, but it becomes exacerbated when they are hungry. Sometimes it’s too much to ask our young ones to stand in line with the aroma from the kitchen filling the air and tantalizing food posters on the walls around them, “ explains Elizabeth Pantley, parenting expert and author of Perfect Parenting: The Dictionary of 1,000 Parenting Tips. “Having a plan and realistic expectations are both important,” she continues. “When possible, plan to dine at a reasonable time, before the kids become famished. Seat the kids at a table while you stand in line. Bring along a few simple toys, like a deck of cards, that can keep the kids occupied while they wait. For younger kids, have a bag of dried cereal to munch on until the meal arrives.”</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Pleasing Parents and Their Kids</strong><br />
Many restaurants that appeal to children aren’t the first choice of parents. “There are places that cater to all generations,” Pantley says. “You just need to look around. For example, a comfortable, casual destination like KFC offers a Kids Laptop Pack with choices like chicken strips and macaroni &amp; cheese. They also serve real homestyle chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and baked beans that satisfy more grown-up tastes. If everyone can find a favorite on the menu, then eating out can be fun for the whole family.”</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Keeping the Kids Entertained</strong><br />
“Adults view dining out as a rich, social experience, while kids just want to eat and run,” Pantley explains. Once the kids have eaten enough to satisfy their hunger, they look for entertainment. “Bored kids misbehave; busy kids tend not to act out. So bring toys with you or use what’s available. Try letting the kids stack sugar packs, play ‘I spy,’ or enjoy a few rounds of tabletop coin hockey. And keep your post-meal conversation short. The longer you stay, the more likely the kids will act up.”</p>
