<p align="justify">More children than ever before are being diagnosed with special needs “neurobiological disorders” such as ADHD, clinical depression, sensory integration dysfunction, autism and Asperger’s syndrome. Children with these disorders are very likely to have sleep difficulties. In addition, the problems that characterize the disorders will be greatly exacerbated by a lack of sleep.</p>
<p align="justify">I cannot stress enough the importance of good sleep hygiene and relaxation skills. Children with neurobiological disorders are often stressed—as they struggle to control their behavior, “fit in,” and try to keep up with their schoolwork. They may also suffer from sleep-related side effects of medications that they are taking. Medications to treat mood disorders, stimulant medications used to treat attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder and some of the medications used to treat tics in Tourette’s syndrome can all contribute to sleep problems.</p>
<p align="justify">If sleep problems continue to plague your child, work with your physician. Consider alternative therapies such as nutritional and dietary supplements, biofeedback and Chinese medicine. This is likely to be an adjunct to the care provided by your child’s primary-care physician. To ensure maximum benefits and avoid any negative interactions between traditional medication and alternative remedies, be sure that all of your child’s health-care providers work together. When you find the right healing modality for your child, you are likely to see a big improvement.</p>
<p align="justify">All children do best with healthy sleep habits. However, everything needs to be “buttoned down” if your child has special needs. For instance, while many children would have some difficulty settling down after a stimulating evening, it might cause a child with a neurobiological disorder to be up half the night. And while a consistent bedtime is always recommended, a child with autism is likely to feel very unsafe and unsettled if his bedtime routine is disrupted. For many children, it’s as if their reactions have been cranked up to full throttle. Of course, each child is different and you will know best what sets off a problem in your own child. However, in general, the same rules apply—only more so.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Tips for a Good Night’s Sleep</strong></p>
<li>Avoid late afternoon or evening caffeine and sugar consumption. (Sodas are usually a huge source of both sugar and caffeine.)
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Avoid eating dinner later than three hours before bed if it seems to energize your child. (Eating too late at night raises the metabolic rate and energizes some children.) If your child has a bedtime snack, have it half an hour to an hour before bed.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Limit overstimulation. Limit television and video-game playing as well as reading an especially exciting book before bed. Play beautiful, soothing music of your choice to help calm and relax your household.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Have a quiet period just before bed. An easing-off period is important because most children have trouble going from full throttle to sleeping peacefully.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>Have an evening bedtime snack that contains tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that the brain converts into melatonin, which assists in sleep. Many children find a glass of warm milk calming and it is a good source of tryptophan. Other sources of tryptophan include cottage cheese, yogurt, pineapples, plums, bananas, eggs, turkey, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews and peanuts. It’s best to combine these tryptophan rich foods with complex carbohydrates like whole-grain cereals, bread or potatoes; it helps the brain to absorb the tryptophan. Bedtime snack suggestions: whole-grain cereal with milk, oatmeal with milk, peanut butter sandwich with ground sesame seeds, oatmeal cookies with milk.

<li>Give your child a ten minute warning before it’s time to get ready for bed to help him make the transition and finish up what he is doing.

</li>
<li>Have a consistent bedtime and a consistent bedtime routine. A warm bath is particularly soothing for most children because it relaxes the muscles and gets their bodies ready for rest.
<p align="justify">&nbsp;</p>
</li>
<li>If your child is overly sensitive to light or sound, keep the lights dim and speak quietly throughout the bedtime routine.

<p align="justify">Some of the key nutrients in brown rice include B vitamins, maganese, selenium, iron and fiber. The health benefits of brown rice read like a laundry list to disease prevention and boosting the immune system. These benefits include lowering cholesterol, reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, stroke and colon cancer, reduced severity of asthma, and lower frequency of migraine headaches.</p>
<p align="justify">Whole grains, like brown rice may also help women in weight management. An obesity study conducted at the Harvard School of Public Health showed that women who consistently consumed more whole grains weighed less than women who consumed fewer.</p>
<p align="justify">When it comes to eating brown rice, most people discover the nutty flavor is far more appealing than the bland taste of its stripped down relative.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Age to introduce:</strong> About six months old in the form of infant cereal only. About 12 months for cooked grain texture.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>At the market:</strong> Brown rice contains natural oils, which can turn rancid on the shelf. For packaged rice, check for usability dates and when buying in bulk, choose a store that has a high turnover. If organic brown rice is available, consider purchasing it over conventionally grown rice. Conventionally grown brown rice has been found to contain small traces of arsenic. While the levels of arsenic are low and will not cause immediate illness, the build up of arsenic in the body, might be linked to some cancers.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Storage:</strong> Oil-rich brown rice will turn rancid at room temperature. If stored in a tightly closed container in the refrigerator or freezer, it will stay fresh for up to a year.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Tips on cooking rice:</strong> Rice can be a little tricky to cook perfectly. Here are a few tips from the U.S. Rice Federation that will help you out:</p>
<ul>
<li>Accurately measure rice and liquid.</li>
<li>Set timer to prevent under or over-cooking.</li>
<li>Keep lid on pot during cooking to prevent steam from escaping.</li>
<li>Rice triples in volume. Use cookware appropriate for the amount of rice you are preparing.</li>
<li>Do not stir. Stirring releases the starch, resulting in rice that is sticky.</li>
<li>At the end of cooking time, remove lid and test for doneness. If rice is not tender or liquid is not absorbed, cook 2 to 4 minutes longer.</li>
<li>When rice is cooked, fluff with fork or slotted spoon to allow steam to escape and keep the grains separate.</li>
</ul>
<p align="justify">For those who plan ahead, soaking brown rice overnight cuts the cooking time dramatically. Soak the rice in the measured amount of water you&#8217;ll need to cook it, and cook it in the same water, adding more if necessary. DO NOT drain the rice after soaking it, nutrients will be lost.</p>
<p align="justify">And for those who do not like to cook rice, you can pick it up from your local Chinese restaurant. Almost all Chinese restaurants offer a choice of white or brown rice.</p>
<p align="justify">Here are some creative and tasty ideas for adding brown rice to your family meals: Never serve a boring side dish ever again. Adding a few simple ingredients to brown rice will put a gourmet spin on any family dinner. After your brown rice has been cooked, and while it is still in a hot pan, try adding any of these ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>Chopped cilantro, parmesan and lemon zest with 2 tablespoons olive oil.</li>
<li>Chopped mango, black beans, 1 tablespoon lime juice and 1 tablespoon olive oil</li>
<li>Chopped, cooked shitake mushrooms, green peas, sesame seeds (or a drizzle of sesame oil) and 2 tablespoons olive oil</li>
<li>Chopped tomatoes, scallions 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 1 tablespoon olive oil</li>
<li>Chopped pineapple, cilantro and 2 tablespoons coconut milk</li>
<li>Chopped cooked carrots, sliced almonds, and fresh parsley and 2 tablespoons olive oil</li>
<li>Creamed spinach, crumbled gorgonzola, and chopped walnuts</li>
<li>Chopped cooked broccoli, cubed firm tofu, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, and 1 tablespoon olive oil</li>
</ul>
<p align="justify">Don’t throw out leftover rice. It is great to have on hand for stirring into soups and broths. You can also use it to make terrific salads, here are two simple recipes.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Veggie Brown Rice Salad<br />
</strong><em>Ingredients:<br />
</em>2 cups cooked brown rice<br />
1/2 cup corn kernels (roasted is a nice touch)<br />
2-3 seeded, chopped plum tomatoes<br />
1/4 cup chopped green and red pepper<br />
2-3 chopped green onions<br />
1/2 cup shredded Monterey jack cheese<br />
1 garlic clove, minced<br />
2 tablespoons lime juice<br />
1/4 cup olive oil<br />
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Directions:</strong> Toss all ingredients in a bowl, add salt and pepper to taste, and serve.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Fruity Brown Rice Salad</strong><br />
<em>Ingredients:<br />
</em>2 cups cooked brown rice<br />
2 apples, peeled, cored and chopped<br />
1/4 cup chopped pecans<br />
1/4 cup dried cranberries<br />
1 cup vanilla or lemon yogurt<br />
1/4 cup of honey<br />
2 tablespoons lemon juice.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Directions:<br />
</strong>Toss all ingredients in a bowl and serve.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/raising-healthy-babies-cant-start-too-early1.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1445" title="raising-healthy-babies-cant-start-too-early" src="http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/raising-healthy-babies-cant-start-too-early-199x300.jpg" alt="" width="199" height="300" /></a>The usual list of things to do and not to do can include, but certainly not limited to, are eating habits, exercise, rest and stress release while avoiding smoking, alcohol and drugs.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Every person is different, without getting into &#8220;lists&#8221; of what vitamins and minerals to take or the amounts, we will just touch on some of the basics. Sensible eating and lifestyle habits are at the forefront.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Starting with healthy eating, look to a well-balanced, nutritious diet of lots of fresh greens, fruits and whole grains, organic if possible, to avoid consumption of pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals are detrimental to you and your baby. At the very least, if organic is not an option, avoid foods that contain additives and artificial ingredients.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It has been estimated that Americans consume about 5 lbs of additives/year. If you include sugar, the most used additive, the number jumps to an astounding 135 lbs /year. <p style="text-align: left;">Additionally, avoiding junk foods, highly seasoned or fried foods will help with energy levels as well as keeping low the intake of liver clogging hydrogenated fats. When choosing healthy proteins, cooking practices should be considered to be very important. Steer clear of undercooked or rare meats, poultry and fish which can cause food poisoning.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Considering we are approximately 70-75% water, being well hydrated, especially during pregnancy is imperative. The body&#8217;s water supply is involved in and responsible for nearly every bodily process, including digestion, absorption, circulation, excretion and the transport of nutrients. It is essential to drink about half your body weight in ounces/day (eg. 130 lbs = 65 oz).</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Consuming a high quality water is of the utmost importance, investing in a reputable water purifier or purchasing purified or spring water is the way to go. Distilled water is fine in moderation, too much or drinking solely distilled actually robs your body of vital minerals.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Avoiding high sugar or chemically laden drinks, such as sodas, soft drinks, fruity drinks, etc will keep the additives down as well as the empty calories. (If you drink 100% juices, diluting with pure water will make it easier on the system to handle and keep your insulin from spiking) Other than the obvious reasons to pass on alcohol, it is a depressant, dehydrates and robs you of vital nutrients, including Vitamin C.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">After touching on food and water, smoking not only affects the lungs, hence oxygenation of every single cell, but smoking causes serious depletion of vitamin C which is an antioxidant required for collagen formation, tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, immune function, healthy gums and an endless list of additional tissues and functions requiring this vitamin.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Moderate exercise (always check with your doctor or midwife) can not be over emphasized, it helps to alleviate many of the common problems of pregnancy. Improving circulation, helping to prevent hemorrhoids, constipation and varicose veins, to name a few, can be reason enough for many women to hit the walking path.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Strengthening the circulatory system gives more endurance, improves your physical condition and some studies suggest it can actually result in shorter labor and help the mother to bounce back quicker.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The previous items are some very basic considerations in your child&#8217;s health before it arrives. OK, the sweet little bundle has arrived, now the parents will do what they can in feeding and caring for the new addition. From the right crib to covering edges, outlet guards, breast feeding or formula, bathing, there is an endless list of things to consider&#8230;&#8230;. the point is of the long list of things to get or have or change or do for the health of your baby, some very important considerations may be overlooked if the parents aren&#8217;t aware.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">At the top of list is the bedding and clothing that babies live in. Racking up almost 60% of their time in bed, the sheets your baby is in are just as important as the construction of that oh so fabulous crib. Have you thought of organic? Did you know they produced organic bedding and clothing? Were you aware they manufactured baby organic bedding and clothing? Most people really have no idea, it is just something they hadn&#8217;t thought of as well as the fact it is not quite yet the main stream.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Organic means growing fibers in fields without synthetic chemicals, for at least three years. Third-party certification organizations verify that organic producers use only methods and materials allowed in organic production. Pure, natural, chemical free.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Conventional clothing and bedding embedded with chemical toxins from growing to processing to finishing are now unacceptable to many. In the child and baby arena, it is getting even more so. As concerned parents start to research or happen by an article with vital information on poison exposure, they are finding that children and infants are uniquely at risk from pesticides because of physiological susceptibility and greater relative exposure. Three major factors are particularly important:</p>
<li style="text-align: left;">Chewing on clothing, crawling outside or on floors, make children more exposed to chemical toxins.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Children&#8217;s bodies and brains are still developing and maturing.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Per unit of body weight, children consume more food and fluids than adults, which may contribute to increased toxic exposure. Thus environmental poisons can have more serious effects on children.According to Pesticide Action Network North America (PANNA), conventionally grown cotton uses more insecticides than any other single crop and epitomizes the worst effects of chemically dependent agriculture. Each year cotton producers around the world use nearly $2.6 billion worth of pesticides &#8212; more than 10% of the world&#8217;s pesticides and nearly 25% of the world&#8217;s insecticides.Just a little food for thought as new parents investigate all the avenues that contribute to the health of their children. The bottom line is less chemicals, healthier baby, period.
<p>Considering the susceptibility of our babies, is it any wonder that organic cotton would be a health saving choice? It certainly seems prudent to reduce the amount our children are exposed to. One way is by using organic fruits and veggies.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Organic produce is getting easier to find in regular supermarkets as the demand and production increases. Still, it&#8217;s often two or three times as expensive, and the choices are likely to be limited. One way to bring organic into the reach of your budget is to take up organic gardening. Even just a few cherry tomato plants can make a big difference in the overall amount of toxins you ingest.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It might be impossible to buy all organic fruits and vegetables. If you can&#8217;t, try to go organic for at least those fruits and veggies that tend to be loaded with pesticides. The top offenders among fruits are peaches, apples, strawberries, nectarines, cherries, pears, and imported grapes.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Among veggies, watch out for bell peppers, celery, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes. The twelve foods just mentioned are called by some the &#8220;Dirty Dozen.&#8221; Buying these foods as organics can eliminate the bulk of pesticides from your diet. The next most contaminated vegetables after the top dozen are carrots. Since we tend to use carrots frequently, you might want to opt for organic ones, especially if you use them in juicing.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Safest selections among non-organic produce include onions, frozen corn and peas, broccoli, cabbage, kiwis, bananas and pineapple. (Data was determined by the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit agency.)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">What about washing produce to remove pesticides? Washing helps to remove substances like bacteria, but don&#8217;t trust washing and peeling to get rid of the pesticides. Studies have shown that the residues work their way into the very cells of the fruit or vegetable.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Don&#8217;t forget about your non-diet exposure to pesticides. Use simple natural insect repellents in your home. If you have a serious insect infestation, there are bait-type insecticides that are much safer to use than sprays that go everywhere. And just forget about those bombs. They leave residue on everything in your house <!-- change these --></p>

Commercial formula comes in cans or other containers which will be discarded after use. Bottles these days are most likely the disposable plastic bags that fit inside a plastic tube. Even if you use glass bottles, you still have nipples that wear out and must be thrown away.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Natural nursing may be less common than bottle feeding these days, but there doesn&#8217;t have to be a mystery surrounding it. For most mothers, the occasional problems, such as discomfort or seeming to not have enough milk, can be easily remedied. For instance, adding nutritional yeast or dairy products to the diet can increase milk production dramatically. Be sure to take a complete vitamin supplement, too.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">When it&#8217;s time to nurse your baby, you will feel a tingly sensation in the nipple which is followed by a release of milk. This &#8220;let-down reflex,&#8221; which is the body&#8217;s natural response to a crying baby, is not something you can easily control. For this reason, many moms, but by no means all, need to have nursing pads on hand. For green baby care, invest in some good soft cotton nursing pads that can be washed and reused. Look for organic cotton, since standard cotton is a crop that is nearly always heavily doused with insecticides. But be aware that you may not need nursing pads at all.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">If you should have discomfort when nursing, there are a number of natural salves on the market designed to soothe sore nipples. If these don&#8217;t do the trick, an innovative product called &#8220;Booby Tubes&#8221; might help. These are organic cotton tubes filled with natural flax seed which can be cooled in the fridge or warmed briefly in the microwave, and then placed in the bra like nursing pads. Cooling or warming the nipples can offer just the relief you need. Booby Tubes have been heartily recommended by many natural mamas.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Nursing your baby can be an important part of raising your family in an environmentally responsible way. It&#8217;s also cheaper and extremely convenient. Sometimes it can be intimidating, but with education and determination, you most likely can succeed at breastfeeding your baby.</p>

Many children will eat junk if it’s available to them. The first step, then, is to make junk less accessible. Clean out your cabinets and refrigerator. Keep only a minimum amount of treats on hand. If you absolutely must have your chocolate, keep it hidden from little eyes. Interesting alternatives: Kids aren’t going to get excited about carrot strips and apple pieces! Keep a supply of tasty healthy choices available. Look for low-fat, low-sugar snacks that will appeal to your child. There are many types of muffins, bagels, breads, fruit-based snacks, puddings, and crackers that make good snack choices.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Powerful Habits:</strong><br />
Children tend to have favorite foods that they eat over and over. Try to replace the old favorites with a similar but healthier choice. For instance, if your child often eats potato chips, try to find a salty, crunchy replacement, such as pretzels. If your child is hooked on candy, choose licorice, jellybeans, or hard candy in small quantities as a better choice. (Note: Do not give hard candy to young children who may choke on it.)</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Get moving! Encourage your child to be more active. Bored kids who aren’t staying busy may fill their time by eating. Enroll your child in a club, sports team or get her started with a hobby or craft activity. Replace old habits, such as munching in front of the TV with a more productive activity.</p>

</strong>As long as your child is healthy, and is of normal height and weight, relax your attitude about food. The more you worry and scold, the bigger battleground food will become. In addition, if you also have specific rules about food, and enforce them with a calm demeanor, you’ll have fewer battles.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Offer healthy choices:</strong><br />
Limit the high-fat and high-sugar foods that are available to your child. Offer healthy choices and don’t worry so much about the occasional food jags. Evaluate your child’s diet on a weekly, not daily, basis. Most kids, when given nutritious options, will eat a balanced diet when viewed over a weekly time period.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Schedule:</strong><br />
Have a specific schedule for meal time and snack time, and don’t allow snacking on unhealthy food at other times. (A piece of fruit or a veggie at any time is fine!) If your child is hungry when a meal is served she’ll more likely eat what’s put in front of her. Modify meal times, if possible, to take advantage of your child’s hungry parts of the day. As an example, most kids are truly hungry when they walk in the door after school. Take advantage of this by serving dinner at that time and a light snack later. This way, the kids will eat a healthy meal instead of filling up on snacks while they wait for dinner.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Serve smaller portions:</strong><br />
Your child’s stomach is about the size of her clenched fist, smaller than you thought! If you serve meals on smaller plates and include just a small amount of each food, the meal won’t appear so intimidating to your child.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Give in – a little:<br />
</strong>Serve your child’s favorite food as a small side dish to meals. A half peanut butter and jelly sandwich makes a fine side dish to roasted chicken!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Create rules:</strong><br />
Do you remember eating the dinner your mother set in front of you without a fuss? Most of us do. The reason is that our mothers did not feel the ambivalence about serving meals that we do. Try to modify your way of thinking to one simple thought, “This is dinner. If you’re hungry eat, if not, you’re excused from the table.” Save a plate of dinner for your child, and if she’s hungry an hour later offer the dinner, and nothing else. Be consistent with this rule, and your child will begin to eat what’s served, just like you did when you were a kid.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>One night off:<br />
</strong>Allow your child the option to have toast or cereal for dinner one night a week, passing on a meal he doesn’t like. When he knows he can skip one meal he’ll make a decision to eat things that aren’t favorites, and save his “cereal day” for the day you’re having the food he likes least.</p>

<ol style="text-align: left;">
<li><strong>Maintain a consistent bedtime and awaking time.<br />
</strong>Your child’s biological clock has a strong influence on her wakefulness and sleepiness. When you establish a set time for bedtime and wake up time you “set” your child’s clock so that it functions smoothly.Aim for an early bedtime. Young children respond best with a bedtime between 6:30 and 7:30 P.M. Most children will sleep better and longer when they go to bed early.</li>
<li><strong>Encourage regular daily naps.</strong><br />
Daily naps are important. An energetic child can find it difficult to go through the day without a rest break. A nap-less child will often wake up cheerful and become progressively fussier or hyper-alert as the day goes on. Also, the length and quality of naps affects night sleep – good naps equal better night sleep.</li>
<li><strong>Set your child’s biological clock.<br />
</strong>Take advantage of your child’s biology so that he’s actually tired when bedtime arrives. Darkness causes an increase in the release of the body’s sleep hormone &#8212; the biological “stop” button. You can align your child’s sleepiness with bedtime by dimming the lights during the hour before bedtime.Exposing your child to morning light is pushing the “go” button in her brain — one that says, “Time to wake up and be active.” So keep your mornings bright!</li>
<li><strong>Develop a consistent bedtime routine.<br />
</strong>Routines create security. A consistent, peaceful bedtime routine allows your child to transition from the motion of the day to the tranquil state of sleep.</p>
<p>An organized routine helps you coordinate the specifics: bath, pajamas, tooth-brushing. It helps you to function on auto-pilot at the time when you are most tired and least creative.</li>
<li><strong>Create a cozy sleep environment.</strong><br />
Where your child sleeps can be a key to quality sleep. Make certain the mattress is comfortable, the blankets are warm, the room temperature is right, pajamas are comfy, and the bedroom is welcoming.</li>
<li><strong>Provide the right nutrition.</strong><br />
Foods can affect energy level and sleepiness. Carbohydrates can have a calming effect on the body, while foods high in protein or sugar generate alertness, particularly when eaten alone. A few ideas for pre-bed snacks are: whole wheat toast and cheese, bagel and peanut butter, oatmeal with bananas, or yogurt and low-sugar granola.Vitamin deficiencies due to unhealthy food choices can affect a child’s sleep. Provide your child with a daily assortment of healthy foods.</li>
<li><strong>Help your child to be healthy and fit.</strong><br />
Many children don’t get enough daily physical activity. Too much TV watching and a lack of activity prevents good sleep. Children who get ample daily exercise fall asleep more quickly, sleep better, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling refreshed.Avoid activity in the hour before bedtime though, since exercise is stimulating – they’ll be jumping on the bed instead of sleeping in it!</li>
<li><strong>Teach your child how to relax.</strong><br />
Many children get in bed but aren’t sure what to do when they get there! It can help to follow a soothing pre-bed routine that creates sleepiness. A good pre-bed ritual is story time. A child who is listening to a parent read a book or tell a tale will tend to lie still and listen. This quiet stillness allows him to become sleepy.</li>
</ol>

Even mothers who must take daily medication for conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, or high blood pressure can usually breast-feed.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">They should first check with the child&#8217;s pediatrician, however. To minimize the baby&#8217;s exposure, the mother can take the drug just after nursing or before the child sleeps. In the January 1994 issue of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics included the following in a list of drugs that are usually compatible with breast-feeding:</p>

<li>acetaminophen</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>many antibiotics</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>anti-epileptics (although one, Primidone, should be given with caution)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>most antihistamines</li>
</ul>

<li>alcohol in moderation (large amounts of alcohol can cause drowsiness, weakness, and abnormal weight gain in an infant)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>most antihypertensives</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>aspirin (should be used with caution)</li>
</ul>
