<p align="justify">Most parents can hardly wait for their baby to say its first word. This usually happens between the nine months and a year. From about two years, the child should be able to use simple phrases, and by three he should be able to use full sentences. By four, he should be fully able to talk, although he may still make grammatical errors. By five, he should have acquired basic language.</p>
<p align="justify">There is little doubt that language acquisition is one of the key milestones in early childhood development. Much of a child&#8217;s future social and intellectual development hinges on this milestone. A language delay can lead to isolation and withdrawal, and to learning difficulties and poor academic performance. Recent research has revealed a dramatic link between the development of spoken language and written language among children, and the importance of language acquisition to basic reading skills.</p>
<p align="justify">Many parents believe that the term &#8220;language development&#8221; implies that the child’s acquisition of language is an automatic process. This, however, is not the case. There is nothing that any human being knows or can do that he has not learned. This is especially true of language acquisition.</p>
<p align="justify">The child begins to learn language from the day he is born. From the very first moment it is the parents’ responsibility to lay a proper foundation that will enable the child to acquire adequate language skills. Just like parents must ensure that a child follows a healthy and balanced diet for optimal physically development, they must take steps to ensure optimal language development.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>How Language is Acquired</strong><br />
Parents should start talking to their little baby from the day he is born. Some mothers are by nature quiet and reserved. Others have the unfortunate idea that it is foolish to talk to their babies, knowing that they do not understand. The mother, who does not talk continually while feeding, bathing and dressing her baby, is laying the foundation for a late talker.</p>
<p align="justify">The baby learns language in one way only, and that is by hearing language as the parents talk and talk to it. The more a parent can talk to a child, often repeating the same words, the same phrases, the same structures over and over, the sooner the child will learn language.</p>
<p align="justify">An important thing to note here is that by the time a baby is about nine months old he should be able to understand simple words and commands. He may perhaps also be able to say a few simple words already. Invariably, however, one finds that the baby understands much more than he is able to say. In fact, this remains so of any person throughout his life. One is always able to understand more of any language, even one’s mother tongue, than one is able to use in active speech. This is even more so of any second or third languages that a person is able to speak.</p>
<p align="justify">This shows that we have two more or less separate masses of language knowledge, our PASSIVE knowledge (also called receptive language) on one hand, and our ACTIVE (expressive language) on the other. When we listen or read, we make use of our passive vocabulary, and when we speak or write, of our active vocabulary.</p>
<p align="justify">An important thing to note here is that the child’s passive vocabulary came into being through constant and continual repetition of words, phrases or structures. Once a word, phrase or structure has been repeated often enough, it also becomes part of the baby’s active vocabulary. This shows that the active vocabulary can only be improved VIA the passive. Research has shown that a child who is just beginning to talk must hear a word about 500 times before it will become part of his active vocabulary. Long before that it will already form part of his passive vocabulary. This means that parents should create as many opportunities as possible in which their baby can hear them talk.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>The Secret of Reading to Your Child</strong><br />
Parents should read to their children as often as possible. The secret, however, which will lead to optimal language development, is to read the SAME stories over and over and over.</p>
<p align="justify">In the &#8220;good old days&#8221; there was not the abundance of storybooks that there is today. Parents were compelled &#8211; it was also part of the child-rearing traditions &#8211; to tell over and over to their children the few stories that they knew, or to read over and over to their children the few books in their possession. They also spent a lot of time teaching their children rhymes and songs. As I discovered for myself through my own son, this over and over repetition of the same stories and rhymes was extremely beneficial for the acquisition of language. In fact, I took this tradition to the extreme, exposing my son to only ONE book for nearly two years.</p>
<p align="justify">Soon after my elder son, Gustav, was born, I bought him a book with the story of Pinocchio. The book was aimed at four-year-olds. Except for talking to him continually, I started to read to him from this book when he was only two or three months old &#8211; as often as I could, over and over and over. I found this tedious, of course. Gustav, however, loved it, and the results of this experiment made all my efforts worthwhile. Not only did he start talking much sooner than most children do, but when he was just over two years, he could recite nearly all the pages from Pinocchio. When turning to a new page, one only had to read the first word or two on that page and he would recite the rest of the page like a parrot. In itself this may seem quite useless, but of great importance was that the vocabulary in this book soon became part of his everyday speech. In terms of language development, he was soon miles ahead of his age group. In fact, to this day, his vocabulary and his ability to speak with clarity are quite astounding.</p>
<p align="justify">When a child is a bit older, one should start teaching him nursery rhymes. Research has shown that knowledge of nursery rhymes among three-year-olds was a significant predictor of later prereading skills even after the children’s IQ and their mothers’ educational levels were partialed out.</p>
<p align="justify">While an apple a day keeps the doctor away, talking forever makes your child clever!</p>

<p>&#8220;Dad, play with me!!&#8221;</p>
<p>Sound familiar?</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re a parent, these plaintive cries from your children can become daily shouts. As busy moms and dads, we&#8217;re continuously torn by the demands on our time. Here are some simple ways to spend time with your kids while getting the jobs done that need to be done (including the toughest job of all, parenting). These Sneaky Fun ideas are also great ways to teach our children exactly how to successfully accomplish many routine tasks.</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Make a silly dinner together.<br />
</strong>Think &#8216;Green Eggs and Ham&#8217; or try a picnic on the living room floor. Bring your child along for the meal planning, shopping, prep time and clean-up. Involve them each step of the way.</li>
<li><strong>Turn on the music and clean, clean, clean.<br />
</strong>Forget TELLING your kids to go clean; side-by-side, with some of their favorite music playing, move through the house dancing and cleaning. They&#8217;ll love it (and so will you).</li>
<li><strong>Exercise together.</strong><br />
You know you need to do it. Your child is your perfect exercise partner. Make it a &#8216;talk and play&#8217; time and you&#8217;ll both get fit together.</li>
<li><strong>Share a hobby.<br />
</strong>Love to fish, garden, sew, paint, sing? Share that love with your youngster. Try an interest that fascinates them. Learn a shared passion &#8211; together.</li>
<li><strong>Start a girls or boys night out.</strong><br />
You will make an incredible impression with this one. Take your daughter out for regular manicures and lunch. Stay close to your son with a favorite concert or sporting event. Teach your children about wholesome entertainment and the joy of healthy relationships. You can even team up with another parent and child for regular fun; just make sure that honest conversation is the true priority.</li>
<li><strong>Improve their skills.</strong><br />
Do you have a student struggling with homework? Quit nagging and ask them to teach YOU what they&#8217;ve learned. Be a patient listener. The fastest way to learn is often to teach.</li>
<li><strong>Wash the cars.</strong><br />
Need I say more? Water, the chance to soak mom or dad, and a sense of accomplishment when it&#8217;s all done. Follow up with an ice cream cone for a job well done.</li>
<li><strong>Growing things.</strong><br />
Countless gardeners have discovered deep satisfaction in sharing their love of growing things with children and grandchildren. Gardening is a useful de-stressing tool and the most frustrated child tends to loosen up and share their heart while getting their hands dirty alongside a trusted adult.</li>
<li><strong>Plan, plan, plan.</strong><br />
If your household is anything like mine, it benefits greatly when I take the time to map out regular activities. Menu-planning, budgeting and vacationing come to mind, for starters. Show your child (of the appropriate age) how to use their time and money wisely by including them in the planning of everyday family activities. As they mature, they can easily be put in charge of some of these planning sessions, teaching them to younger siblings. Your trust and belief in your kids can ease the stress on them as they grow, too.</li>
<li><strong>Organize.</strong><br />
Almost all families struggle with organization in some area. Truth be told, we&#8217;re simply busy people and have often outgrown the simplistic organizing methods that once worked just fine. Give your kids the opportunity to be the creative organizer in your family. Whether its making sense of the family photos or tackling the hall closet, do it with them to get the job done and make a memory that&#8217;s shared.</li>
<li><strong>Schedule the fun.<br />
</strong>Sometimes the best defense is a good offense. Try scheduling a set time of fun in exchange for a set time of work. For example, Monday can be family board game night while Saturday morning sees the family hard at work in the yard. Sometimes it&#8217;s easier for kids to see the point when it&#8217;s a straight trade off of time and energy.</p>
<p>The idea here is simple and clear. Use everyday activities to build relationships and teach responsibility. After all, everybody wins when &#8216;fun&#8217; becomes a part of daily life!</li>

<p>Love, respect, and appreciation for music are easy to share with our children and build life skills at the same time. During the first years of our child&#8217;s life, musical skills build self-esteem and enhance expression. Musical rhythms spur motor development. Learning melodies and words stimulates listening capacity and help children develop receptive language. Specific areas of child development and learning are positively affected by exposure to and training in music. Preschoolers given piano and voice lessons, for example, have been found to improve dramatically in their ability to put together picture puzzles of animals. Playing the piano at the preschool age influences development of the cortex, the part of the brain used for thinking, talking, seeing, hearing, and creating. Music training contributes to the ability to learn or enhance mathematics skills.</p>
<p>Music clearly is a resource for living, growing, and learning and can be an integral part of our children&#8217;s growing experiences.</p>
<p>Exploring Sound, Rhythm, Melody and Music</p>
<p>Music is controlled movement of sound, in time.</p>
<p>Music is three basic components: Sound + Rhythm + Melody = Music</p>
<p><strong>Sound</strong><br />
To help children understand music, it is helpful to look at each component separately. First there is sound, one that we make or one from another source. A few examples of sound are a bird chirping, a teakettle whistling, and a child banging on a pot with a spoon. If music were compared to a painting, sound would be the background color. In our bodies, sound corresponds with our central nervous system. A pleasant sound opens and expands us. It can energize or calm us. A shrieking sound puts our nerves on edge. Like the background in a painting, sound is the first step in creating music.</p>
<p>Here are some ways to explore sound with our children.</p>
<ul>
<li>Have your children listen to the sounds around them. How many different sounds can they find in the kitchen or backyard?</li>
<li>Encourage children to be creative making sounds. Have them use their voices or household objects to make sound. Allow them to make pretty, irritating, or silly sounds. They are all music if they reflect creative exploration or honest feelings.</li>
</ul>
<p>The purpose for creating sound is not necessarily to make *beautiful music* but to foster self-expression and open up our children&#8217;s ears to the world around them.</p>
<p><strong>Rhythm<br />
</strong>The second component of music is rhythm. Rhythm defines and organizes the sound through a beat. For example, is the whistling of the teakettle long and steady or short and choppy? Is the child&#8217;s banging on the pot fast and upbeat or smooth and slow? In a painting, the rhythm would be the overall movement or flow of the composition. When you first look at the painting, where do your eyes go? Is the painting easy to look at or is it busy and annoying? This is its rhythm.</p>
<p>In our bodies, rhythm corresponds to our own internal body rhythm-our pulse and breath. If the musical beat is quick and steady, our heartbeat and body movements will mirror it. If we are tired, listening to African drumming can kick our body back into gear. On the other hand, if a two-year-old is running around out of control, slow rhythmic music like Bach or Vivaldi restores inner calm and slows most children down. Explore and add rhythm to the sounds that children make.</p>
<ul>
<li>Have your children play with different beats: fast, slow, steady, and erratic.</li>
<li>Have them practice listening to the different rhythms around them, like the water dripping from the faucet or the ticking of a clock.</li>
<li>Ask them if they can feel the vibration of a musical beat in their bodies, and if so, where? How do the different rhythms feel in their body? How do their feet want to move with the different beats?</li>
<li>Try hand clapping to the rhythm of a poem and foot tapping to a favorite piece of music. These activities are every child&#8217;s favorite, free entertainment.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Melody<br />
</strong>Finally there is melody. Melody corresponds to our emotions. It gives sound and rhythm its feeling and sensual quality. It is the part of music that expresses the hills and valleys of an individual&#8217;s experience. It goes straight to our heart and feeling center. Melody can uplift our spirit, calm us during times of stress, or move us to tears. Returning to the painting metaphor, melody would be the overall feeling that the painting evokes as we look at it. Does the painting draw us in and create a feeling of peace, excitement, distress, or discomfort? Introducing melody to the earlier sounds and rhythms will help children learn self-expression.</p>
<ul>
<li>Have them hum a tune or create a melody, adding emotion to sound.</li>
<li>Experiment expressing sounds that are emotional: happy, sad, funny, etc.</li>
</ul>
<p>Melody turns a sound into a personal and unique statement. By playing with sound, rhythm and melody our children discover a new vocabulary and tool to use for expression when words are hard to find.</p>
<p>We can use creativity and imagination to choose different styles of music by which our children can express their feelings, relax, stimulate their minds or allow their creative juices to flow. A variety of selections, rhythms, tones, and melodies allows children to develop their own musical tastes and sparks their natural curiosity to explore the world of music on their own.</p>

<p align="justify">You want to raise a reader. That much you know. But how? That&#8217;s the $20,000 question. You could probably spend that $20,000 on how-to books for you, readers for your child, flash cards and other accessories, and specialized reading programs promoting every possible avenue to full literacy.</p>
<p align="justify">You could, but you don&#8217;t have to do all that. The facts are simple. Between 80-85 percent of children learn to read by the middle of first grade and most of those children will learn without the benefit of fancy reading programs and books. Many of those children will learn to read as the result of simple preliteracy activities they encountered at home and/or school.</p>
<p align="justify">In fact, studies show that starting early is not necessary and could do more harm than good. Formal reading instruction, especially if introduced too early and if focused on &#8220;skill and drill,&#8221; can actually interfere with emergent literacy. However there are things you can do before you get to that point&#8211;and these activities are fun and can lay a strong early literacy foundation to make it easier for your child to learn to read later on.</p>
<p align="justify">As a basic foundation for learning to read and write, kids need strong speaking and listening skills. When you and other adults around your kids encourage them to talk, ask questions, and use dramatic play, it increases their vocabulary, allows them to hear and practice building sentences, and gives them more knowledge to understand spoken and written language.</p>
<p align="justify">Simply reading, talking, and listening to a young child in a warm and positive environment at every opportunity are among the most important things you can do.</p>
<p align="justify">There are three skill areas that form the foundation for reading. Kids who develop strong skills in these areas have greater success learning to read: Print Knowledge, Literacy Awareness, and Language Understanding.</p>
<p align="justify">Print knowledge is simply the understanding that print (letters, words, symbols, and printed media such as books and signs) carries a message. This encompasses learning that people read text rather than pictures and the correct way to read a book or page (right side up, left to right, top to bottom).</p>
<p align="justify">Literacy awareness encompasses a child&#8217;s first efforts to use print in a meaningful way. This includes recognizing letters and groupings of letters (the child recognizes his or her name or the name of a store) and attempts to write letters and words such as his or her name.</p>
<p align="justify">Language understanding is just that-understanding how language works. This includes being able to sound out individual letters in a word and counting the words in a spoken sentence.</p>
<p align="justify">Children develop these skills by having many early experiences with language, books, and print. They can have these experiences as part of everyday life, through play, conversation, and a wide range of activities. Young children use play and talk as a way to expand, explore, and make sense of their world. When kids talk about daily tasks and special events, tell stories, sing songs, and scribble, they are laying the groundwork for reading and writing.</p>
<p align="justify">The primary reason many children struggle with learning to read is because they simply do not have enough experiences with language, books, and print. They need more time at home and in their early childhood programs devoted to helping them develop the skills that lead to reading. A lack of developmentally appropriate skill-building at an early age can significantly limit the reading and writing level a child attains.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Becoming literate</strong><br />
Becoming a literate person is something that every human begins almost from birth. In essence, we are actually programmed to become literate. However, that does not mean the path to literacy is smooth and easy.</p>
<p align="justify">While the progression to literacy is a natural evolution we are all programmed to follow, literacy does not occur in a vacuum. Literacy emerges in individuals only when they are immersed in a community of literacy. Interactions such as sharing a picture book, telling a story, and talking about experiences are central to emergent literacy.</p>
<p align="justify">Most parents are aware of the importance of reading to their child, but it is so important that it cannot be emphasized enough. According to the Partnership for Reading, a project administered by the National Institute for Literacy, &#8220;Reading aloud to children has been called the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for success in reading.&#8221;</p>
<p align="justify">Typically, parents play an important role in developing this skill by reading to children and showing how important reading is to their daily life. Find time to read aloud with your child every day. Lap time with picture books and stories can strongly motivate your child to enjoy reading.</p>
<p align="justify">Studies focusing on parents of successful readers found that they do more than simply read to their children. They also engage in specific strategies, which maximize the reading experience. These strategies are actually fairly simple: talk about the book with your child before reading it; read aloud using an enthusiastic voice; and let your child ask questions about the book. Parents can also encourage their child to &#8220;read&#8221; the story back to them (especially if it is a favorite that has been read many times to the child) and/or share fun variations of the story.</p>
<p align="justify">However, while this is significant, this is not the only way your child learns. Knowledge is constructed as a result of dynamic interactions between the individual and the physical and social environments. In a sense the child discovers knowledge through active experimentation. Try to make books available for your child to explore and enjoy on their own as well as with you.</p>
<p align="justify">It is important to remember that literacy is much broader than simply reading. Allowing a child to draw or color and playing word games and singing songs are also a part of literacy. Sometimes literacy development does not actually involve print. There are many ways of learning to read and write. Some of these ways may look suspiciously like play which makes them all the more effective.</p>
<p align="justify">Children learn through play. Play provides opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and manipulation that are essential for constructing knowledge and contributes to the development of representational thought. During play, children examine and refine their learning in light of the feedback they receive from the environment and other people. It is through play that children develop their imaginations and creativity. During the primary grades, children&#8217;s play becomes more rule-oriented and promotes the development of autonomy and cooperation which contributes to social, emotional, and intellectual development.</p>
<p align="justify">Make-believe among peers also plays an important role in emergent literacy. Pretending is, in fact, an ideal area in which children can develop literacy-related language skills. In pretend play, children use language to create imaginary worlds; and the manner in which language is used when pretending has much in common with reading. It is important to provide children time and settings in which they can use language with each other in a variety of social dramatic play activities.</p>
<p align="justify">Block play, too, can serve as a foundation for literacy. While reading and writing and playing with blocks seem miles apart at first glance, block play offers the literacy-related benefits of helping children understand symbolization, refine visual discrimination, develop fine-motor coordination, and practice oral language.</p>
<p align="justify">So remember, your goal is not to teach your child to read so much as it is to help them become literate. Immerse your child in literacy by talking, reading, singing, pretending, and playing and you will have done a great deal to prepare your child to become a reader.</p>

<p>Did you know that cooking with your kids is a natural way for them to develop motor skills? If you&#8217;ve never looked at cooking that way before, think again. There&#8217;s a reason why kids have a universal love for cooking &#8211; just like for stacking blocks and banging!</p>
<p>Cooking is especially good for preschoolers and here&#8217;s how:</p>
<ol>
<li>Two year olds are developing large muscles in their arms: They will enjoy stirring and stirring and stirring <img src='http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> . My two year old is always asking to stir; and her subconscious knows why! At 2 years old, a child naturally imitates circular strokes as part of their normal physical development. So, let them stir at every opportunity.Here are some ways to encourage arm muscle development through cooking:
<ul>
<li>stirring: flour, eggs, pancake batter, gelatin making, etc.</li>
<li>scrubbing potatoes and vegetables</li>
<li>cleaning the cutting board: Give them a washcloth and some lukewarm water with the cutting board in the sink. They&#8217;ll have a blast rubbing the wet washcloth up and down the cutting board to clean it.</li>
<li>pouring from large measuring cups into a bowl</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</li>
<li>Two year olds are developing the ability to turn pages: Another motor skill developed during the preschool age is the ability to turn pages.So &#8211; just pondering here&#8230;is it the story they love so much or just turning the pages of the book? Well, actually both. They need the motor development of turning the pages; and the pictures and vocabulary improve their intellectual development.
<p>&nbsp;</li>
<li>Two year olds love &#8220;patting&#8221; and &#8220;pressing&#8221;: From being fascinated with &#8220;patty-cake&#8221; chants at an early age, preschooler&#8217;s still love to pat and press.I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll recognize your preschooler doing this at the park: scooping up rocks or sand, piling them up, and patting the top into different shapes.
<p>Well, here&#8217;s some suggestions to bring the &#8220;patting&#8221; inside:</p>
<ul>
<li>packing down brown sugar in the measuring cup</li>
<li>gently pressing a fork on top of peanut butter cookie dough on the cookie sheet</li>
<li>patting to level off the top of a cup of sugar</li>
<li>patting and pressing on pizza dough</li>
<li>pressing down with a cookie cutter on rolled sugar cookie dough</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</li>
<li>Two year olds love to dip &#8211; and this develops arm muscles skills too!: it takes a lot of coordination to dip! Getting the food in the dip, then moving the arm and somehow getting it into your mouth. If it wasn&#8217;t difficult, they wouldn&#8217;t get food all over their face! <img src='http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> So, unless your 2 year old always has a clean face when he or she is done eating, here&#8217;s some dipping opportunities:
<ul>
<li>carrots in salad dressing</li>
<li>french fries in catsup</li>
<li>dipping a spoon in the emptied batter bowl to clean out the goodies <img src='http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':-)' class='wp-smiley' /> </li>
<li>dipping fruit in a fruit dip or chocolate (like frozen bananas or strawberries)</li>
<li>dipping chicken or fish in a batter for you to cook</li>
<li>dipping the bread in French toast mix</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</li>
</ol>
<p>So, instead of &#8220;shooing&#8221; your preschoolers and 2 year olds out of the kitchen, let them dive in with these simple tasks that not only give them great pleasure, but help them develop their age appropriate motor skills.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Your baby’s first year is filled with many challenges and new experiences for everyone in your family. One of the many things that your baby is going to be learning in his first year is the ability to socialize and get along with others. The first place that your baby is going to learn to socialize with others is within your own family. You should also be exposing your baby to playmates and other people outside your immediate family. This is so that he can learn communication and interaction skills at as young an age as possible.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><img src="http://www.babiesonline.com/articles/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/your-baby-and-social-skills.jpg" alt="your-baby-and-social-skills.jpg" align="left" />No matter how young your baby is, it is never too soon to let your baby enjoy social activities. The earlier you start to teach social skills to your baby the better his social skills will be when he is older. You should be considering getting out with your baby a couple of times a week so that you are both interacting with other parents and babies.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Your baby won’t really “play” with other babies. Babies will, however, be very interested in watching the other babies and at times may interact with them by hitting, touching, or grabbing them. Babies won’t participate in a “playing” activity until they are toddlers. What your baby gains by being exposed to other babies is the stimulation of being around other babies.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">There are several ways that you can get out of the house and socialize with your baby. One thing you should keep in mind is that you should keep your baby away from other babies if your baby isn’t feeling well or if one of the other babies is sick. Babies are very susceptible to colds and you will want to limit your baby’s exposure to illness whenever possible.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Here are some things you may want to consider:</p>
<li style="text-align: left;"><strong>Try to expose your baby to as many social settings as possible.</strong><br />
Taking your baby out is a great way for you both to have a change of scenery and vary your daily routine. Your baby will enjoy going out with you, whether you are just going to the store or joining a parent-baby exercise class at your recreation center. He will be excited and stimulated by all the new faces, voices, and settings that he will encounter on his adventure.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;"><strong>Find a parent/baby playgroup to join.<br />
</strong>Your baby will enjoy watching other babies and children while you interact with old and new friends. The more social settings that you take your baby to, the more broad his world becomes.</li>
<li style="text-align: left;">Taking your baby to a playgroup or for a swim at the pool gives your baby the chance to be part of a larger group. Your baby will quickly learn that the smiles and coos he uses on you at home get the same response when you are both out. He will learn that he can have a positive impact on others around him as he gets the response that he is looking for.
<p align="justify">There are many things that you can do in your own home so that your baby gets the socialization that he needs. Have your baby sit with you at the dinner table whether he has been introduced to solids or not. This is a great way for your family to spend quality time and for your baby to watch as others interact around him.</p>
