<p align="justify"><img border="0" vspace="5" align="right" width="250" src="http://www.babiesonline.com/images/pgnono250w.jpg" hspace="10" alt="Pregnancy No Nos" height="166" /> When I was expecting my first child, threats to my baby&#8217;s health seemed to lurk everywhere. I knew, of course, that alcohol, cigarettes, and drugs of any kind were off-limits. But what about those lattes I&#8217;d chugged before I knew I was pregnant? Did I need to get rid of my beloved cats? What sort of environmental hazards was I unwittingly exposing my fetus to? Nine months of caffeine withdrawal, cat avoidance, and breath-holding-around-noxious-odors later, my strapping baby boy arrived.</p>
<p align="justify">Unlike me, you don&#8217;t have to be paranoid when you&#8217;re pregnant. &#8220;You can&#8217;t put yourself in a glass bottle during pregnancy—all you can do is avoid known risks,&#8221; says Dr. Robert Resnik, a professor of reproductive medicine at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine. Since some women, such as those with high blood pressure or gestational diabetes, need to take extra precautions, talk to your doctor about special circumstances that relate to you. Also steer clear of the following:</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Too Much Caffeine<br />
</strong>For java junkies like me, the research on caffeine during pregnancy has been maddeningly contradictory. Some studies point to problems such as miscarriage and low birth weight, while others show no such relationship. The latest consensus is that only excessive amounts of caffeine (more than 300 milligrams a day) are likely to cause these problems, says Dr. Kathleen Bradley, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the UCLA School of Medicine. The caffeine content of different brews varies, but you should be able to stay under the 300-milligram mark by limiting your daily quaffing to one or two 5-ounce cups of coffee or tea or a few 12-ounce cans of soda. (Since even non-colas can pack quite a caffeine punch, check the label before you imbibe.) And while chocolate does contain caffeine, it typically has much less—1 to 35 milligrams per one ounce—than coffee.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Cat Litter</strong><br />
Cat feces may play host to a parasite that causes toxoplasmosis. The symptoms (fever, fatigue, and sore throat) are similar to those of a garden-variety flu, but the results (miscarriage, preterm labor, or serious health problems in the newborn) can be devastating. Even so, having a baby on board doesn&#8217;t mean you need to send your puss packing, says Marion McCartney, a certified nurse-midwife and the director of professional services at the American College of Nurse-Midwives in Washington, D.C. It simply means you should put your mate on litter-box duty for the nine-month duration. It&#8217;s also a good idea to wash your hands after heavy petting sessions with the cat and after handling raw meat. Don&#8217;t feed yourself or the cat undercooked meat (which can harbor the parasite). Wear gloves when you&#8217;re gardening and avoid children&#8217;s sandboxes. (Roaming cats may use these as litter boxes.)</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Certain Foods</strong><br />
<a target="new" href="http://www.bolads.com/cmom.asp"><img border="0" vspace="10" align="right" width="300" src="http://www.clubmom.com/img/affiliate/general_300x250.gif" hspace="15" alt="Club Mom Rewards" height="250" /></a> Beware, foodies: Uncooked, soft cheeses (such as feta, Camembert, Brie, and blue-veined varieties), unpasteurized milk and the foods made from it, and raw or undercooked meats, fish, and poultry may contain listeria bacteria. During pregnancy, listeriosis (symptoms include fever, chills, diarrhea, and nausea) can cause miscarriage, preterm labor, or stillbirth. Some seafood may also contain high levels of mercury, PCBs, and other toxins. If these foods are consumed during pregnancy, the baby is put at risk for developmental delays. (Your local health department may be able to tell you which fish to avoid.) Experts recommend that expecting mothers limit their servings of shark and swordfish—which contain higher levels of mercury than other fish—to one three-ounce serving a month. Finally, lab tests have linked heavy consumption of saccharine to cancer. Though you&#8217;re not likely to swill enough of the artificial sweetener to equal several times your body weight, you may still want to forgo those little pink packets for now. Aspartame (NutraSweet, Equal) appears to be a safe sugar substitute.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Herbal Remedies</strong><br />
You know that many prescription drugs are off-limits during pregnancy, but the natural remedies you can pick up at health-food stores are okay, aren&#8217;t they? Guess again: Herbal remedies can have a potent effect on your body—and your baby&#8217;s—cautions McCartney. Don&#8217;t take anything without running it by your health-care provider first. She&#8217;ll most likely tell you not to use any during your first trimester. Throughout your pregnancy, steer clear of goldenseal, mugwort, and pennyroyal, all of which have been associated with uterine contractions (which could possibly lead to miscarriage or preterm labor); Asian ginseng (which interferes with metabolism); and feverfew (though popular for migraine headaches, it has unpredictable effects on pregnant women). It&#8217;s also wise to avoid herbal teas that purport to have medicinal benefits.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Home Hazards</strong><br />
If you haven&#8217;t been gripped by that famous pregnancy cleaning-and-nesting frenzy, chances are you will be soon. Safety tips for those 3 a.m. floor-scrubbing and nursery-decorating sessions: Read labels carefully. Wear gloves and work in well-ventilated areas. And avoid aerosols (which disperse more chemicals into the air than pump bottles do), oven cleaners, paint fumes, solvents, and furniture strippers. Although frequent, heavy exposure to chemicals in the workplace (home workshops count, too) has been linked to birth defects, Bradley explains, home use of most products is more likely to make you feel faint or nauseous—not a great proposition when you&#8217;re nine months pregnant and perched high on a ladder or wedged behind the toilet.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Overheating<br />
</strong>Soaking in the hot tub or relaxing in a sauna may seem like the perfect way to pamper your pregnant body, but raising your core temperature—especially during the first trimester—may boost the odds of birth defects. It&#8217;s safe to soak in a lukewarm bath, though. Just make sure that the temperature is not above 100 degrees and that you get out after about ten minutes, Resnik advises. Sustained exercise in very hot, humid weather can also raise your core temperature. When you do exercise, be sure to drink liquids before, during, and after, and if you find that you&#8217;re heating up, take a five- or ten-minute breather.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Lead</strong><br />
Lead exposure has been linked to miscarriage, preterm labor, low birth weight, and mental and behavioral problems in children. Residue from the toxic metal can lurk in places you might not suspect: houses built before 1978 (the year lead paint was banned), tap water, even calcium supplements. A few precautions will reduce the amount of lead you come into contact with: Call in a lead-abatement specialist if you live in an older home with chipping or peeling paint. (Whatever you do, don&#8217;t try to sand or scrape it off yourself.) Filtering your water may help, or have your tap water tested. (Call the Environmental Protection Agency&#8217;s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 800-426-4791 for a testing lab in your area.) Finally, if you take a calcium supplement, ask your doctor to recommend one that&#8217;s low in lead, such as Tums 500 Calcium Supplement.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Oral Sex</strong><br />
Don&#8217;t worry, you needn&#8217;t swear off oral gratification entirely. (After all, when you hit that physically awkward last trimester, there may not be much else you can do between the sheets.) But when he&#8217;s pleasuring you, your mate should be careful not to blow air into your vagina, if that&#8217;s something that&#8217;s part of his, uh, repertoire. Why? Your blood vessels are dilated during pregnancy, and, though the chances of this happening are very rare, a fatal air bubble could potentially enter your bloodstream, McCartney explains.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Certain Over-the-Counter Drugs</strong><br />
Your back is aching, your heart is burning, and your stomach is roiling—do you have to forgo all pharmaceutical relief? Not necessarily, says Bradley. But since even benign-seeming remedies, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain cold preparations, can cause problems for your baby, don&#8217;t pop any pill without your doctor&#8217;s approval. If one medication is off-limits, she can suggest an alternative. Acetaminophen (Tylenol), for instance, is fine.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Secondhand Smoke</strong><br />
You may have given up cigarettes, but if your mate&#8217;s still puffing away, your baby&#8217;s getting hefty doses of the 43 cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke. In fact, exposure to secondhand smoke during pregnancy raises the risk of low birth weight, sudden infant death syndrome, and other health problems. So ask your partner to quit or to cut down—if not for his own health, then for yours and your baby&#8217;s. And tell anyone who lights up around you to kindly take it outside.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Stress<br />
</strong>Every time you look down, your growing belly reminds you of just how much your life will change once your baby is born. Exciting, yes. Stressful? You bet. Even so, try to take it easy. Stress causes the release of hormones that reduce blood flow to the placenta and triggers contractions, and it has been linked to miscarriage, preterm birth, and low birth weight, Bradley explains. If you hold a high-pressure job, do what you can to scale back. If you&#8217;re feeling the heat in your personal life, practice relaxation techniques, surround yourself with supportive people, and seek counseling if need be.</p>
<p align="justify"><strong>Vitamin A</strong><br />
As is the case with its chemical relative Accutane (a prescription acne drug), high doses of vitamin A during pregnancy can cause heart and facial defects, says Resnik. How much is too much? Some studies have indicated that problems can occur when pregnant women take more than 10,000 international units (IU) a day, while others list 25,000 IUs and even 50,000 IUs as the threshold. You get a fair amount of vitamin A from the food you eat, and though the dose in your prenatal vitamin should be fine, your doctor can tell you whether it&#8217;s an excessive amount.</p>

<p align="justify">Why is being so tired so common in the <a href="http://www.babiesonline.com/pregnancy/monthbymonth/trimester1.asp">first trimester</a>? When a woman first gets pregnant, and the egg implants in the uterus, the body starts working twice as hard. The egg is multiplying in size daily, the uterus is growing, the breasts are growing, and the body is left feeling tired and worn out. Because pregnancy is a huge change for a woman&#8217;s body, feeling tired is expected.</p>
<p align="justify">During the <a href="http://www.babiesonline.com/pregnancy/monthbymonth/trimester2.asp">second trimester</a> however a woman generally gets a break. At this point, the baby&#8217;s organs and limbs are formed, and the heart is beating, so the body doesn&#8217;t have to work quite as hard to sustain the pregnancy. A woman gets her energy back and doesn&#8217;t feel as tired anymore. It is definitely a stage of pregnancy a woman should enjoy.</p>
<p align="justify">With the <a href="http://www.babiesonline.com/pregnancy/monthbymonth/trimester3.asp">third trimester</a> in full force, a woman starts to feel tired again. By this point the baby is just growing and the uterus starts growing more rapidly, putting a lot of strain on the woman&#8217;s body. Normal everyday activities can leave a woman feeling tired, as well as the extra last minute preparations and shopping she will be doing as the baby gets closer to its due date. She will find that she is back to taking naps daily, or at least wanting to take naps daily, as well as going to bed earlier, and sleeping in later.</p>
<p align="justify">It gets worse! If you think you are tired now, just wait until <a href="http://www.babiesonline.com/babysfirstyear/">after the baby arrives</a>! Try to rest as much as you can before the baby is born, because sleep may become a distant memory for the first few months of a baby&#8217;s life.</p>
<p align="justify">If you feel extremely tired and do not believe you are pregnant, there are other reasons why you may feel fatigued. Stress and depression can cause a woman to feel like she wants to sleep all the time. Physical exhaustion can also be a cause. If you are sick, or are getting a cold, you might find that you are more tired as well. Just announced, after six months of a hot-house infatuation that had swept her off her feet, &#8220;Sorry, Miranda, this isn&#8217;t working&#8221; &#8212; said it not even kindly, at that &#8212; and said he wanted out.</p>
<p>He wasn&#8217;t interested in hearing why Miranda thought that in fact it was working; that it was a relationship and relationships needed a little working out now and again. No, he didn&#8217;t want to hear it. For him, it was the end. Discussion over. And he never came back.</p>
<p>It always seems unthinkable, this scenario in which a lover not only leaves, but leaves abruptly; runs you over like a train, as if whatever you had together was a meaningless diversion and you, well, you were just something to be left on the side of the curb like roadkill. In all my years of writing about love, this form of goodbye is the one that draws the most letters from readers.</p>
<p>Or maybe you weren&#8217;t dumped by a Hit &amp; Run lover but are limping along with someone I call The Visitor &#8212; a man who comes and goes at whim and cannot commit to anything other than a measly, &#8220;Hey, so, maybe we&#8217;ll get together a week from Tuesday, if I don&#8217;t have to work and if my mother isn&#8217;t coming into town? Or maybe another night that week, maybe? Or something? Whatever.&#8221; He&#8217;s someone who ascends on you for food, drink, sex &#8212; and may or may not stop by again sometime soon, as if you were the owner of a Bed &amp; Breakfast, and you run a good enough establishment for him to return sometime to be served and nurtured again, but only at his leisure.</p>
<p>How do you ever find closure when you&#8217;ve been decimated by a Hit &amp; Run? How do you find love with a Visitor who can&#8217;t even commit to a definite date? How do you, a 21st century woman, busy and happy and self-sufficient and more successful than women ever were before, extract love and commitment from a 20th century man? For yes, these men &#8212; I call them Drama Kings because they&#8217;re solo performers, one-man shows who still long for an ancient, man-centric universe &#8212; still think the world revolves around them. They still think women are put on earth to please them &#8212; but haven&#8217;t the talent nor the inclination to return the favor.</p>
<p>How do you cut your losses? I&#8217;ll tell you how. You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again. You remind yourself that you&#8217;re lucky to get out. That these guys are exhausting and will always drain you dry. You are too busy, and much too evolved, for this nonsense.</p>
<p>You do not call the Hit &amp; Run lover on his cell phone to locate him, nor to find out why you were so unceremoniously dumped. (You&#8217;ll only be humiliated over again. You&#8217;ll only hear the most chilling replies &#8212; &#8220;Oh, it&#8217;s you. Um, yeah I know I left you on the side of the road, but I&#8217;m busy.&#8221; Or, &#8220;No, I really don&#8217;t want to talk about it.&#8221;) You do not try to make a Visitor become a grown-up man who can commit to something more than a &#8220;Whatever.&#8221; You remember one thing, and one thing only: You do not NEED this man. You have a roof over your head. You are a smart, darling, self-sufficient, loving woman who wants a smart, darling loving man. He is out there, but this one is not the one.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re hurt by a Drama King &#8212; of which The Hit &amp; Run and the Visitor are but two of five types &#8212; you&#8217;ve been hurt by a man who doesn&#8217;t care how he behaves. Who doesn&#8217;t care to become deeply attached. Like a skilled performer, he only pretended he wanted a relationship, pretended he was fit for love, but in the end, sabotaged them both.</p>
<p>So before we focus on your heartbreak, I want to remind you: Why do you always feel exhausted with Drama Kings? Because they sap your energy. Why do you always feel lonely in your relationship with them? Because they refuse to get close. Why do you always feel anxious and sort of weirdly needy? Because my friend, they aren&#8217;t giving you what you need. And never will.</p>
<p>So do not idealize him, and do not blame yourself. You escaped! You avoided spending more time with a love fraud! I once spoke with a woman who&#8217;d been dumped as unceremoniously as Miranda was, and listened to her litany of self-blame &#8212; she&#8217;d &#8220;wasted years of my life&#8221; with this man; she&#8217;d &#8220;made a mess&#8221; of the relationship, she &#8220;should have known it wouldn&#8217;t work out.&#8221; Awash in misery, I couldn&#8217;t get her to rejoice in the fact that she had a chance, now, to find a man able and willing to love her back.</p>
<p>Today, though, I find women recovering quickly and not beating themselves up. Best of all &#8212; I find them saying they feel better than they did before they wrestled with their Drama Kings! The hundreds of women I&#8217;ve spoken with over the years do NOT stay permanently depleted by these guys: In fact, post-Drama King, strong women only get stronger. They seem to have developed steadily, cumulatively, through their relationships with Drama Kings &#8212; no matter how long it lasted or how dramatically it ended. It&#8217;s as if the adult woman&#8217;s self grows more resilient, more durable &#8212; stronger &#8212; through even the knottiest, nuttiest relationships &#8212; just as a child&#8217;s self grows. Kids get through developmental difficulties by working through issues of attachment &#8212; and so, I believe, do adults. It&#8217;s as though the developing personality is like kindling, needing to rub against another personality in order to create the spark that ignites the ever-growing self. That&#8217;s why you will move on from your Drama King ready for love sooner than you think &#8212; growing ever more proficient at finding a man who&#8217;s able to share center stage; and able to love you back.</p>
<p>Avoiding a Drama King in the future requires holding on to the sense memory of what it feels like to be with one. You have to know your responses, and pay attention to them. That&#8217;s why I always ask women, Do you feel exhausted when you&#8217;re around him? Lonely? Do you feel as if you&#8217;re banging your head against the wall whenever you try to have a discussion? You must remember these questions, and any &#8220;yes&#8221; answers, because they&#8217;re specifically associated with Drama Kings.</p>
<p>One more thing: When you begin to feel sad all over again, and tempted to play the self-blame game, keep this in mind. An involvement so important that you wanted it to last forever is not a &#8220;waste of time&#8221; because it did not. Few relationships last forever, and the criteria for success have to reflect the realities of the 21st century. That year-long relationship with the guy you loved in college; that fabulous sex you had with the adorable cameraman from L.A. at your first job; those three days we won&#8217;t talk about with someone you shouldn&#8217;t have been with &#8212; they matter, all of them. They not only familiarized you with different kinds of love, but different aspects of yourself in love. Most important, they told you an infinite amount about what you were working through at the time; what was irresistible to you and what was problematic; what developmental issues you were grappling with and what qualities you were searching for and trying to develop in yourself. As I said before, these relationships are what made you who you are today; they made you strong. They gave you self-knowledge. And they prepared you for a deeper, more intimate, love.</p>
<p>We must never, ever, devalue our effort at making love work &#8212; to say things like, &#8220;All that work for nothing,&#8221; or &#8220;I gave him the best years of my life,&#8221; as if time alone were the measure of love. We must respect the effort and the time we put in. The measure of love is your capacity to offer it openly, and to have the intimacy skills necessary to have the connection that you crave &#8212; and a man&#8217;s ability to do the same.</p>
<p>Most men have the same capacity. I think that our attraction to Drama Kings, those men who haven&#8217;t caught up with us yet, men who have rigid, outdated views of love and life, may be hardwired, a built-in responsiveness to different types of familiar, traditional, masculine stereotypes. We can only move past our training by grappling with one or two. And we all do. And we all wind up exhausted and lonely and wishing we could find someone else, someone who is able to love. And then, stronger, more clearly focused, we move on.</p>
<p>There are fabulous 21st century men out there who know that love isn&#8217;t solely a woman&#8217;s job. They have learned intimacy skills. They know that 21st century women are very happy to please them, but that the pleasure must be returned &#8212; that women want to be pleased, too. They know, too, that the days of standing by your man no matter what are over.</p>

<li>Diseases linked to the father’s genes include leukemia, asthma and mental developmentPreconception healthcare involves making sure that there is an adequate supply of everything that is essential to the health of your egg and sperm and the baby&#8217;s development. This is accomplished by eliminating everything which has been shown to be harmful to that process. It&#8217;s as simple as that.
<p><strong>Your goals, prior to conception are to:</strong><br />
Use Condoms: The presence of immune-mediated antibodies in the female block the passage of the sperm. They are also responsible for miscarriages. So, when you are in the detox and pre-conception phases, it is important to use condoms as a barrier contraceptive to isolate the sperm. This way, the body won&#8217;t be exposed to them to cause an allergic reaction and the body can heal and regroup.</p>
<p><strong>Minimize or Manage Stress:</strong> Where does stress reside in your body? It is different for everyone, but wherever it resides, it is affecting those body parts and the hormones they produce. For instance, if you hold stress in your gut, then the gut responds accordingly. Did you know that the gut produces more neurotransmitters than the brain? Stress affects fertility by increasing a hormone called cortisol.</p>
<p>Learn two natural methods that can greatly increase your chances of conception. These are the Mucous Method and the Temperature Method. The Mucous Method teaches you how to identify fertile and infertile mucous in the reproductive tract. Only fertile mucous accepts, nourishes and transports sperm. Taking the temperature of the body the same time each day will identify hormonal cycles and diseases that may affect fertility. Both are necessary for maximum conception success rates.</p>
<p>Minimize coffee consumption: We are a society of caffeine addicts. Coffee and caffeine are extremely toxic alkaloids. Coffee is a powerful contraceptive agent. Caffeine damages the DNA. Decaffeinated coffee is worse, as dry-cleaning chemicals are used to remove the caffeine from the beans.</p>
<p>Protect, educate and detoxify your body from all common toxins. Unexplained infertility largely results from environmental and dietary toxicity. Common causes of infertility include: heavy metal toxicity, chemicals from various sources, over-the-counter pain killers, &#8220;social&#8221; drugs such as alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, household chemicals, occupational exposure to chemicals, radiation damage, agricultural exposure to herbicides/ pesticides/ fungicides and fertilizers, hormones and estrogens in milk, dairy and meat products, sugar-induced hypothyroidism and insulin resistance, the use of raw soy products (soy milk and soy ice cream), petrochemical exposure, chlorine or fluorine exposure (showers, hot tubs, drinking water), certain sports (swimming, golf, cycling), plastics exposure (especially with heated plastic), microwave ovens, allergies, stress, emotions, gut flora imbalances, autoimmune diseases, hormone imbalances, food-borne organisms (Listeria and Toxoplasma), and more.</p>
<p>Normalize your weight if necessary. Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is greatly influenced by excess weight. Obesity increases the risk of miscarriage, birth defects, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and premature birth. In men, obesity increases heat in the testicles which need to be two degrees cooler than the core body temperature for the sperm to survive. Also, increased estrogen (from the extra fat stores) decreases testosterone production.</p>
<p>Stop using lubricants and products that are toxic to sperm: Pre-seed is the best lubricant to use for intercourse when trying to conceive, as it is sperm-friendly. KY Jelly kills sperm.</p>
<p>Test negative for all genitourinary infections. Genitourinary infections have been shown to be responsible for infertility, miscarriage and fetal growth problems. These include: Streptococcus B, Enterococcus, Herpes Type I and II, Anaerobic bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus millerii, E. coli, Klebsiella, Garnerella, Ureaplasma, Mycoplasma and Candida. Chlamydia infections tend to scar the fallopian tubes and are one of the most common organisms leading to female infertility.</p>
<p>Commit to and accomplish an adequate exercise program. Exercise increases circulation and brings essential nutrients and blood to the ovaries, testes and uterus.</p>
<p>Increase your alkaline reserves by eating lots of fresh, raw fruits/vegetables. Eat lots of raw fruits and raw vegetables. I would recommend 2-3 cups of each daily for the first month for the detoxification period, then 75% of that amount after that.</p>
<p>Add Wheat Germ Oil, wheat germ, or Wheat Germ Pearles to the diets of both the prospective mother and father. Wheat germ has lots of zinc and selenium in it and works on the body to dilate both the fallopian tubes and the seminiferous tubules. This makes the transport of both egg and sperm easier. It also helps to increase sperm counts, motility, healthy morphology and the number of effective, fertile sperm. Three capsules, ½ teaspoon oil, or two tablespoons wheat germ is the usual dose.</p>
<p>Eat two tablespoons of raw, hulled Pumpkin Seeds each day. Pumpkin seeds bind up harmful byproducts of testosterone breakdown in the male and act as a building block for a balanced hormone system in the female. If a little is good, a LOT is NOT better, so stick to only two tablespoons max. Most other disease processes need only one tablespoon per day.</p>
<p>The goal to conquering infertility is to identify those factors that are causing infertility in both the male and the female. By doing so, we can work on individual issues and minimize environmental factors that influence infertility.</p>

A little bit of guilt is okay, but some fathers (and mothers)&#8211;in an effort to make themselves feel better about not being able to spend enough time with their children&#8211;end up withdrawing from their kids emotionally. Leaving your wife to take care of the baby is a habit you don&#8217;t want to get into (and if you notice yourself doing this, there&#8217;s still time to stop). The earlier you and your baby start getting to know one another, the closer and better your relationship will be.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Another common trap parents sometimes fall into is trying hard to make up for lost time. You might, for example, attempt to cram as much active, physical father/baby interaction as you can into the few hours you do have together in the evenings after work. While all that activity might make you feel a little better about being away from your baby during the day, you&#8217;ll also end up overstimulating him. So before you start tickling and wrestling and playing with the baby, spend a few minutes reading or cuddling with him, quietly getting to know each other again. At four months, a day away from you is a long time for your baby. You&#8217;ll both feel a lot better if you spend a little quiet time reconnecting.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">While there&#8217;s no practical way for you to make up for the time you&#8217;re spending away from your child, it&#8217;s important that you find some middle ground. Separate work time from time with your child. Make sure that whenever you&#8217;re with the baby, you&#8217;re with him 100 percent. Forget the phone, the computer, the newspapers, or the TV. You can do all those things after the baby goes to sleep, before he wakes up, or while he&#8217;s busy nursing. You also might want to explore some different scheduling options for your office: getting into work an hour or two early might give you and your baby a few relaxed hours together in the afternoons. And telecommuting to work one day a week allows you to spend your commute time reading your son a book instead of sitting in traffic.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Every person is different, without getting into &#8220;lists&#8221; of what vitamins and minerals to take or the amounts, we will just touch on some of the basics. Sensible eating and lifestyle habits are at the forefront.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Starting with healthy eating, look to a well-balanced, nutritious diet of lots of fresh greens, fruits and whole grains, organic if possible, to avoid consumption of pesticides and herbicides. These chemicals are detrimental to you and your baby. At the very least, if organic is not an option, avoid foods that contain additives and artificial ingredients.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">It has been estimated that Americans consume about 5 lbs of additives/year. If you include sugar, the most used additive, the number jumps to an astounding 135 lbs /year. When choosing healthy proteins, cooking practices should be considered to be very important. Steer clear of undercooked or rare meats, poultry and fish which can cause food poisoning.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Considering we are approximately 70-75% water, being well hydrated, especially during pregnancy is imperative. The body&#8217;s water supply is involved in and responsible for nearly every bodily process, including digestion, absorption, circulation, excretion and the transport of nutrients. It is essential to drink about half your body weight in ounces/day (eg. 130 lbs = 65 oz).</p>

Distilled water is fine in moderation, too much or drinking solely distilled actually robs your body of vital minerals.</p>
