At 1 year old, Addisyn was a happy, healthy, sweet baby. Just 2 weeks after her birthday, she began to get sick. She was throwing up and acting sleepy. We called the doctor's office on a Friday night and were told to bring her in to the clinic the next day. She was sick all night, and we took her in early the next morning. The doctor was very concerned and said that she needed to be sent to LSU medical center across town. (We lived in Bossier City, LA at that time) We were sent to the ER of the local hospital to await transfer to LSUMC. She was taken by ambulance. When we arrived, there was a flurry of activity. Then the doctor stepped out from behind the curtain, looking as if he was about to cry, and said that he needed to talk to us in private. We stepped into a small room and he took a deep breath and said "You have a VERY sick little girl." He went on to tell us that she had severe congestive heart failure, her liver was severely enlarged. The doctor said that she needed to be admitted to ICU immediately!! Once in ICU, tests were done and more doctors wanted to talk to us. We went into another room and they told us that she was more than they could handle and that she needed to be placed on a ventilator and transferred to Arkansas Children's Hospital by helicopter. Around midnight on February 2, 2003, she left LSUMC by Angel 1 helicopter for Arkansas Children's Hospital. We arrived to the Cardivascular ICU around 4 a.m.. We were told that she was non-responsive to pain and was in renal failure. The plan was to put her on pressers to releive the stress on her heart and let it heal itself. Everyday after that was a trail. Everything slowly began to get better, everything that is except for her heart. Her lungs cleared, her liver went down in size, and her kidneys began to function well. On February 19, 2003, Addisyn was listed 1A on the heart transplant list. Just 3 short days later, she got her new heart!! We spent about another 3 weeks in the hospital and were sent home on 15 different medications and a feeding tube. She did very well. There were ups and downs but she was here with us and that was all that mattered to us. Addisyn had several more hospitalizations due to what would normally be small things, but because her immune system was being suppressed, those little things were big to her!! In November of 03 and January of 04 she was back in CVICU for more severe problems, but she was sent home with a great prognosis. On April 1, 2004 she was ill and we took her to her pediatrician. The doctor said that her heart sounded good, her lungs were clear and that it was probably just a bug. We were told to go home, give her pedialyte and if she did not have a wet diaper to bring her back. We went to Walgreens to get pedialyte and she walked around the store. She picked up a toy duck and said "quack quack!" We went home and followed doctors orders and Addisyn did have a wet diaper so I began to feel better about it. Addisyn and I layed down for a nap and we snuggled. I got up to get supper started and her daddy came home. She woke up and came into the living room where we were having supper. She crawled up onto the couch with us and I said "I love you, Boo-Boo." Her daddy told her how beautiful she was. She got down and went around to the other side of the couch. She collapsed and we rushed over. We called 911, and Addisyn began to have trouble breathing and was not responding to us. The 911 operator instructed me on how to tell her daddy to do mouth to mouth. She was not breathing and I was histerical! It seemed like it took the ambulance forever to get there. We rushed to the ER and her daddy went with her, I was told to wait outside. A few minutes later, her doctor came out and sat across from me. She said "We tried everything, she pinked up for a minute, but...." I screamed and shoved the doctor and ran out of the room. I knew my baby was gone. I fell to the floor histerically crying and screaming. her daddy had already collapsed into the arms of a relative. I was told I could go hold her. She looked like she was sleeping and I did not want to let her go when they came to take her. I would not leave until I knew she was not there. Addisyn touched so many lives. She had a beautiful service and the chapel was standing room only! I miss her so much, but I know that she is with God now and I will see her again someday. My family, especially my husband, Sam and my children Lexi and Isaac have really helped me to get through this in one piece. God has chosen to bless us with a baby boy due July 4th 2005. I know Addisyn is watching over him and will always keep an eye on him!! I love you, Boo-Boo! Addisyn's baby brother has arrived!! June 9th 2005, 4 weeks early! Caleb Samuel Riley Scroggins.
