Ezra Slade

Me and the big Sycamore

June 17, 2009
I still love water--our city pool, our baby pool in the backyard, my sprinkler, watering the plants in the garden--any way I can get it!

I helped Mommy make peanut butter cookies to take to my classmates and teachers last week. We made them into coiled snake shapes for my friends. I love to help in the kitchen and to help sweep and help with laundry in any way that I can.

Mommy, Daddy and I went to Mammoth Cave this weekend for Daddy's birthday. We stayed for three days and hiked, toured the cave, rode in a school bus (my first time--I was so excited!!). I am fascinated with tunnels, so the caves were really neat. I was a little under the weather on our trip.

After school on Tuesday I experienced a Febrile seizure which nearly scared Mommy to death, and made me very tired (that, and the five hours we spent in the emergency room). I am fine, and we found out that this type of seizure is common in little guys, and simply a result of a quick increase in body temperature. We are all hoping that I never go through that again!

I am 2 1/2 today! I have been talking up a storm lately and memorizing parts of my favorite books so that I can "read" aloud to myself. I have been able to sing all of my ABCs for several weeks now without missing a beat. I also really enjoy singing Wheels on the Bus, Twinkle Twinkle, Row, Row, Row your boat, the Itsy Bitsy Spider and Where is Thumbkin. I have been completely potty trained (only wearing diapers at night) for over a month. I am very affectionate and love to give hugs and say "I love you".

We just had our family portraits taken again last week and were very happy with the results. I recently spent a few days with Mammaw and Pops while Mommy was at a conference. I love to spend time with them.

I am loving school. The first two weeks were very challenging because I missed Mommy and Daddy terribly, but the third week I decided that school was a pretty neat place to spend time learning and playing.

I love my teachers and my buddies and the playground (particularly the vat of bubble solution, which I soak myself in daily). I am talking in phrases and sentences regularly. My first recognizable sentence with noun/verb/adjective (and proper verb pluralization) was "Boogers are yucky!". I have developed a keen interest in songs (Mommy sings the alphabet song and a numbers song every morning she takes me to school, as well as "The wheels on the bus", and sometimes "twinkle, twinkle", the "itsy, bitsy spider", or "there was an old woman who swallowed a fly". I still love things with wheels and books.

I had a great birthday this weekend. I enjoyed visiting with lots of friends on Saturday, family on Sunday and close family on Monday. Today Mommy, Daddy and Mammaw Cynthia took me to the waterpark for the City employee's picnic. I love water--I love pools, I love to play in the sprinkler Mammaw Louise and Pops gave me for my birthday, and I love baths. I even like to drink out of the garden hose.

I started school today. My buddy Owen goes to school too, so I think I will like it. Mommy and I have a hard time saying goodbye, but hopefully it will get easier when we both get used to it.

My second birthday is coming up this weekend! It is hard for my family to believe! I am excited and ready for my party with my buddy Owen on Saturday, and a family dinner on Monday.

I recently had a fall that fractured my lower tibia, and had to wear a cast (I picked out a green one) for about 2 1/2 weeks. I'm all better now, and Mommy and Daddy are hoping that was the worst we can expect for some time.

I am stringing words together, many of which declare ownership (Ezra's cheese, Ezra's seat, Mommy's book, Daddy's truck). I have more than 350 words that I understand and use. I am still loving books, trucks, cars, animals, etc.

Mommy, Daddy and I recently visited the Cincinnati Zoo and had a great time. My favorite was the elephant exhibit. I also liked the rhino and sloth.

I've enjoyed three days of creeking the last week--one day with Mommy and Daddy and two days with Pops, Mommy and Uncle Dennis and his grandkids. I love being in the creek and seeing fish and frogs and snakes and bugs. I love throwing (and licking) rocks, and wading.

I've made huge progress on learning my colors. I now know green (my favorite), brown, red, yellow, white, and most of the time blue. I also am occasionally picking out purple. Orange, black and grey are still hard for me to recognize.

I have been growing like crazy, although I don't seem to eat enough to even survive much less prosper! Mommy and Daddy try to feed me healthy, well rounded meals, but I'm a carb man. If it's not sweet or bready, forget about it!

As my body grows, so does my vocabulary. I'm up to 145 words that I use correctly (not just repeating). I am still enjoying reading several times a day (with and without parental assistance--sometimes I just sit on the couch and look at my books alone). My favorite things right now are trucks, tractors, buses and vans. I especially like school buses and the garbage truck.

I finally, a couple months ago, formed an attachment to a stuffed animal. Actually two. I love my Mama Kangaroo and her Joey that Aunt Teresa bought me. I can hardly sleep without them, and often try to feed them what I'm eating.

At home one of my favorite activities is crawling into tight spaces and crying for help to get back out. I now say 'thank you' and 'bubbles' a lot. I am really good at using my spoon, but fingers are just so darn handy! I enjoy hiking with Mommy and Daddy. We recently went to Anglin Falls. I also like seeing farm animals (I saw a Scottish cow, horned sheep and alpacas this weekend).

March 25, 2008
I enjoyed hunting for Easter eggs for the first time this past weekend. My friends, Owen, Sasha and Susan were there too! I got the hang of it after awhile, and especially enjoyed the bunny-shaped chocolate graham cookies the Easter bunny left. I like to imitate animal sounds, like "moo", "neigh", "baa", "caw"(a crow), "ssss" (snake and cat), "quack quack", etc.

Waves!

I have become quite the talker, including two-syllable and two-word phrases (yogurt, washcloth, Mamaw, upstairs, etc.). I enjoyed our first real snow of the season. Mommy and I strolled in the snow. When I got down in the snow I was amazed by the white and kept looking at my feet. However, as soon as my hands touched the cold I was ready to go back inside.

I now have a great collection of hats for dress-up. I have a knights helmet, a fireman's hat, a cat-in-the-hat hat, a safari hat, and many others. Hats are my favorite thing right after books.

January 22, 2008
I have added several words to my vocabulary including 'hat' (I love to play with Mommy and Daddy's hats, but please don't put my hat on me!), 'hot', 'cheese', 'fish' and 'light'. I give kisses and really tight neckhugs to everyone I love, including the cats and Pop's dog, Abby. I can follow simple commands, such as "take the book to Daddy" or "put it back", but only when I want to.

December 21, 2007
I can now run (which I usually accompany with a giggle) and have started to climb onto boxes and chairs and anything else I can hoist a leg onto. I love to be read to, and often carry a book to Mommy or Daddy to have some special lap time while they read.

I had my first stomach virus lately and it took awhile to reestablish an appetite. I now love raisins more than anything else. I have started to point and grunt for anything I want, even though I can talk some. I know the word for milk, for instance, but why use it when an effortless grunt gets the same result?

I love being naked, but Mommy will only let me run around nude right before baths.

Head-butting is my favorite way to show displeasure with any situation. Mommy and Daddy try to ignore my behavior so as not to give negative reinforcement, but strangers go crazy when I hit my head on things! Family members usually respond by scooping me up (just what I wanted!) or gasping in fright (fun too). Mommy and Daddy are hoping this is a short-lived stage.

Mommy and I had special one-on-one time for three days while Daddy went to Texas recently. We cuddled and watched movies and read lots of books.

November 5, 2007
I have had some very exciting things happen recently! First of all, I officially weaned myself right before I turned 14 months old. This allowed me lots more freedom than I'm accustomed to. For instance, I spent my first night away from Mommy (when I had weaned down to one feeding a day) on October 23. I enjoyed the time with Mammaw and Pops so much that I made a return trip this week! Also, I had my first (non-family) babysitter on October 29--I visited for a couple of hours with my friend Sasha, whose mommy hires a sitter some afternoons while she is home working.

I also have started walking regularly, taking several steps at a time. I can stand unassisted for long periods of time too. I have also learned to climb steps and shimmy back down them. In fact, I'm climbing more than steps, and getting good at backing off of things bottom-first. I especially enjoy climbing into my rocking chair and rocking myself.

I started giving kisses that smack (previously, I gave juicy open kisses with an 'owah' sound).

I was an elephant for Halloween this year. Mommy and I had Owen and Susan and Sasha and their mommies over for lunch and playtime and costumes.

October 21, 2007
Mommy, Daddy and I went to Baldwin Farms to pick out our Halloween Pumpkin a couple of days ago. I'm in the photo above, but I blend in (I'm the only pumpkin with a head). I crawled through the fields and picked out my very own pumpkin all by myself.

We just enjoyed our first real family vacation! Pops, Uncle Dennis, Mommy and I went to West Virginia for two weeks. Mammaw Louise and Daddy joined us for a week. We stayed in a cabin on the banks of the Cranberry River. We hiked and rode a scenic train and Pops kept us warm with a fire just about every night in the fireplace or woodstove. I love hiking and playing in leaves. I discovered moss and lycopods during our trip and enjoyed playing with the caretaker's beagle puppy. I took my first steps at Camp Splinter the night before Daddy had to go back to KY for class and work!

Pops and Uncle Dennis and I played lots of imitation games and wrestled a lot.
