Joe & Olivia

Welcome to my very special website about my family and me
Joe Samuel

Joe in Nicu (aged 2 weeks)

My name is Joe and I was born on Saturday 27 September 2003 at 4.16am. Just 2 days early.

I couldn't wait to be see my Mummy and Daddy for the first time and was born within 45 minutes of them arriving in hospital weighing in at a healthy 8lb 14.5oz. (Just 4 minutes of pushing time for Mummy!) I came out looking a little purple but Mummy & Daddy were told that was normal for such a rapid delivery.

24 hours after I was born, I wasn't feeling too well and started fitting. The Drs discovered I had acute bleeding on my brain and so I was whisked to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit where I stayed for my first 2 weeks in the world.

Nurse Olivia! Watch out Joe

As a result of the bleed at birth, I developed Hydrocephalus in January 2004. I have todate had a blood transfusion, 3rd Ventriculostomy and VP Shunt surgery and a Resevoir inserted in the top of my scull under the scalp which later had to be retrieved after I unfortunately fell off the bed! I have had four lumber punctures under General Anaesthetic and Sedation and two Resevoir taps. In Sept 08 I was diagnosed with Epilepsy having had a seizure in Oct 07 and another in Sept 08. I now take epilepsy medication twice a day.

My Mummy & Daddy (Judy & Lee) especially want to thank the maternity ward Midwife Teresa for her vigilance and quick thinking. Also the many Drs and Nurses in NICU, especially Sister Jo, Nurse Christine and Joe's Consultant Dr Jones. Finally and not least, all the Neuro team at Frenchay - especially Mr Pople and Sister Jenni.

My Sister, Olivia, has given me lots of cuddles and kisses. She is very special and I love her very much.

Olivia and I are very lucky to have three lots of Grandparents (Pampie Brian & Nanny Joy, Grampie Brian & Nanny Lin and Grampie Geoff & Nanny Marg). They have all gone through so much since I was born but they needn't worry anymore as I am growing up to be a big, strong, brave boy!

I have lots of cousins (Luke & Jacob, Sam & Gabrielle, Charlie & Phoebe, Ryan & Tamsin) who are all much older than me, but they like to play with me and make me smile and laugh.

Mummy has put these pages together to keep a record of what happened to me, so I can learn all about it when I grow up. She says it is also a kind of therapy for her to write it all down, but I'm not too sure what that means, but if it helps her, then so be it!
