“Our joys will be greater, our love deeper, our lives fuller, because we shared his moments.”

“Our joys will be greater, our love deeper, our lives fuller, because we shared his moments.”
Keegan Alexander

Our Angel

Keegan was born and died Monday, June 21, 2004 at 7:13 P.M. He weighed in at 5 pounds, 1 ounce and was 17 1/2 inches long, but we think he was gypped, he wasn't stretched out when he was measured. In spite of the anencephaly, Keegan was beautiful. He looked like most healthy babies with his chubby cheeks(dimple on his right cheek), big blue denim eyes, cute button nose, the most beautiful lips (like Jeremy’s), porcelain skin, and he had the biggest hands and feet. His feet were longer than my middle finger, again, just like his daddy. His face and right arm were bruised and the top of his head is all that differed him from “healthy” babies, he was perfect in every way.

Bathing Keegan

Keegan's Marker

He was handed over to us immediately after he was born. We were able to bathe him, take pictures, and prepare him for the christening we had planned for him. He was prayed over and we were given the rest of the night alone with him. During this time, we told him about all our dreams for him, how much we loved him, and how much we would miss him. I sang four songs to him. The first was “Mommy loves Keegan” and “Daddy loves Keegan” (a song my mom sang to me when I was little), “Glory Baby” (which was sung at his funeral), and “You are my Sunshine.”
We tried to make as many memories with him as we could. We got his footprints as well as some of his hair for keepsakes. The most vivid memory I have is Jeremy rocking Keegan and Jeremy falling asleep holding him. It was the most beautiful sight I have ever seen. At midnight we handed him over to the funeral home. This by far was the hardest thing we have ever had to do.
Keegan had a beautiful rosary and funeral service. When he was to be buried, Jeremy carried his casket to his grave. We watched until everything was completed. It was only fitting, We were there with him from beginning until the very end.
One day we will be with our little angel in Heaven. But as for now we feel honored and blessed by God to have had Keegan as long as we did. There is a saying, “Some people only dream of angels. We held one in our arms.” We were blessed to hold an angel in our arms. Through his life and subsequent death, he has touched so many. We know there is a reason for all of this. Hopefully his life will help other babies and help remind all of us of just how precious life is and how we should love one another.

“Unto us a child is born, a special child for a special reason. We don’t pretend to understand, only to accept and to love.”
