What's New For Infants

Teeth! Not only will you start seeing them soon (if you haven't already), but you should also start brushing them. While brushing a single tooth might seem a little silly to you, it is actually a good conditioning tool for your baby. When you start brushing your baby's teeth early they learn early about the importance and the routine of brushing their teeth.

For safety reasons, you do not want the baby teeth to decay as they are the holding place for the permanent teeth. You baby will also need these first teeth for many years in order to chew, bite and talk properly. Not only will decayed teeth make speech difficult for your child, but it could affect their self image and cause problems that could last for many years. Another advantage for the baby is that the gentle brushing, if done on the gums, can help relieve some of the teething pain. Make sure you use a proper infant toothbrush for any brushing you do at this point.

What to expect at the six month doctors visit

It has probably been 2 months since your baby last saw the doctor and you probably again have lots of questions you have saved up. The doctor will begin with the normal weight and measurements of your baby, as well as re-check any previous problems. He will probably do a developmental assessment to see what skills your baby has perfected, and let you know about those that will be coming soon. He will also talk to you about any problems that he sees.

Your baby will get another round of immunizations assuming that he hasn't had any adverse reactions to past immunizations. This will probably be our last visit to the doctor until your baby is nine months old.

Developmental Milestones*

Now that your baby is probably sitting on his own, and possibly crawling, it is time for him to learn how to get into a sitting position either from lying down or crawling. Practicing this will also help tone up the back and leg muscles of your baby.

What Might Concern You at 24 Weeks

You have probably noticed a change in your babies' bowel movements. Most mom's ask in a panic "Why is my baby's poop this color?". Where before it was predominantly loose and runny, not to mention mustard colored if you were breastfeeding, it is now becoming a bit more solid, darker and smaller.

This is a normal process as the diet of your baby changes. If he seems to be getting a little constipated now, check with your doctor to see if there are any over the counter medications you can give him for gas, that will help him have an easier time going to the bathroom.
