What's New For Infants

Your always active, flirty, friendly baby may begin to act shy and scared around people other than his immediate family. This includes family members that do not live at home but come to visit occasionally. Even if a month ago your baby was completely at ease with this person, he may now start crying when your guest tries to pick him up.

Your baby is smart and he is starting to figure out that you are Mom and Dad and that you provide everything he needs. He might get fearful that the other person will not be willing to give him what he wants, whether it is a toy or food. This phase normally passes. Be sure to warn your guests beforethey visit that your baby is going through a stage, and don't force your baby to go to anyone that he doesn't want to.

New Motor Skills: Your baby may have now learned how to utilize his thumb and forefinger to pick up objects around the house. Everything from food to toys is now easier for your baby to get a good hold of, which will give your infant a sense of accomplishment. Remember to keep items he can choke on out of his reach, and keep an eye on him at all times.

What Might Concern You at 37 Weeks

You have noticed your babies stool go through many changes over the last 9 months. In reality you still never know what you will find when you change his diaper. Depending on what he ate his stool can be any consistency or color. However, you might be noticing something new in your babies stool.

It may start looking like there is sand in your babies diaper when you change him. Even if he has been on the playground, don't get worried that he is eating the sand, although he may have grabbed a handful. Chances are he didn't swallow much since it didn't taste very good. The sand in his stool is more likely from oats that you have been feeding your baby such as Cheerio's or pears which do not digest completely in your baby and appear sandy.
