Infant Development & Milestones Week 42

Your 42 Week Old Baby
A Parent's Guide to Infants

What's New For Infants

There are all kinds of Mommy and Me classes out there, but do you really need to get involved with them? There is no real reason to get your baby started early, although there might be some benefits if you choose to.

Not only will your baby interact with other children his age and size, but you will meet other parents who are in the same situation as you. For stay-at-home moms who don't get out much, this foray into the real world might be just what you need.

If you don't want to join a group, but would like the interaction, there are other options. Start or join a local playgroup. It is unstructured and can be a lot of fun for both your baby and you. These playgroup dates could gather at different houses, or in parks, museums, or the play area in the mall.

Developmental Milestones*

Has you baby been making a lot of noise lately. This is his way of talking, and is often called gibberish or Baby Talk. He is practicing his sounds and seeing what he can put together. While you may not understand him, he knows exactly what he is saying. By responding to him as if you were taking part in the conversation, he will be encouraged to keep talking, which will help tune up his verbal skills. One day, what he is saying will make sense to you too!

What Might Concern You at 42 Weeks

concerned

As your baby gets teeth, he is going to want to use them, not only on food, toys and furniture, but on you as well. While this might be cute at first, it is definitely not something you should encourage as it can cause problems later on.

To get your baby to stop you need to be firm with him. Pull him away and tell him, "Ouch", or "No biting". Keep it in an even voice so he knows you are serious and are not joking. If you do this enough, it won't be long before your baby gets the message and goes back to biting other objects, that won't talk back.
