What's New For Infants

Separation anxiety can be found in babies as young as 7 months, but is common around their first birthday. While your baby has become increasingly more independent, he always knows that you are close by when he does need you, so the thought of you not being there scares him. He may be scared even when his favorite babysitter or his grandparents are watching him.

There are ways to help your baby get through this time. Having familiar babysitters is the best thing. Make sure the babysitter is reliable and understands situations like yours. Have the babysitter come at least 15 minutes before you leave, so your departure isn't sudden for your baby. Try to plan to leave while the baby is in a good mood, and not stressed because he is tired or hungry.

Make sure you have everything you need when you leave. Coming back in after you have left will only upset your baby more.

Developmental Milestones*

Your baby may not seem too social around other kids. If your baby seems to be a loner when you are in the play group and seems to be uninterested in what other kids are doing, then let him play by himself. Don't try to push him. If you notice him looking at other kids and it seems like he wants to get involved, but you think he might just be a bit shy, try taking him over and sitting with him while he plays with them. Be sure not to leave him until you are confident that he feels secure in the situation.

What Might Concern You at 49 Weeks

Your baby, who once waved "bye-bye" to people, won't do it anymore. Did he forget how? Definitely not!

Babies can bore easily, which is the case when it comes to learning new things. You may notice that as soon as your baby has perfected something new, he will drop it in order to perfect the next "new" thing. You shouldn't worry about this and should continue to encourage his new activities.

If however your baby seems to not be able to do anything that they have learned in the past, and is not learning anything new, call your pediatrician to get your baby in for a checkup.
